Steely Dan - Your Gold Teeth II (1975) ...
One my favorite performances from Donald Fagen - lovely acoustic piano fills...with a beautiful guitar solo by Denny Dias, and great drumming by Jeff Porcaro...from the album, 'Katy Lied' (1975)
I love the way those opening chordal progressions give way to an airy...I dunno... Jazz/Country Waltz, I guess, ...Then Denny solos over those same progressions from the opening, but this time in a waltz beat....

Cool tune.
Are you really just a shadow of the man that I once knew? Are you crazy, are you high? Or just an ordinary guy. Have you done all you can do? Are you with me Doctor?

I gotta admit, Katy Lied is an album I came to appreciate much later than later classics like Aja, Gaucho, and the Royal Scam...Don't know why...one day, I happened to be listening to a compilation.. Bad Sneakers and Doctor Wu came on...and I could'nt stop listening to those tunes. I was like, shit, I gotta go back and listen for to that album, for real this time!

Beautiful tune! Steely Dan takes you to another place, every time. I love at the 2:50 mark where you think the solo is over, but then the drum fill takes you to another round and the guy is just killin it!
Yes, an underated Steely Dan album is Katy Lied....but all their 70's albums are great in their own way. Music, sweet music, I wish I could caress and...kiss, kiss...

I love Your Gold Teeth II, what an awesome tune is that! One of the Dan's most jazzy pieces, with a fantastic guitar solo. One of my favorites of Katy Lied.
Also I like Your Gold Teeth (from an earlier SD album), that one is really cool too:

Katy Lied is a highly underrated album! It has to bee my favorite Dan album after Aja.

I really didn't like Dr Wu for a long time. It's a little more subtle than some other Dan tunes. Lately it's one of my favorites. Absolutely beautiful chorus.
I was just listening to this album, and noticing Your Gold Teeth, also. It's one of those tracks that has a spark of personality that sets it apart from, say, Rose Darling (which is a perfectly good tune) My Legacy

I really like Walter Becker's approach to both Guitar and Bass...probably doesn't get enough credit for his playing....

That whole song is great but the last 30 or so seconds...priceless.
Everything about Steely Dan draws me in but the Lyrics, man. Every time i hear the lyrics to a Dan song i can imagine myself living out that particular song in real life. On Katy Lied i trip on the song Everyone's Gone to the Movies.
That Mr LaPage guy is one crazy dude. Rest in Peace Bettie Boo. See u soon.

I found this old interview with bass player Chuck Rainey interesting... It dates back to 2004.
He has some complimentary and critical things to say about Becker and Fagen.

Different album but if we're talking great Steely Dan songs/guitar solos, this is the one I'm digging on the most right now:
Larry Carlton | |

On SD's last pass through L.A., I got to see Mr. Carlton do Kid Charlemagne (along with other classic tunes he'd recorded with them) live in concert. That solo brought the house down. "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

I have a recording of that concert (or have there been another gig with Carlton?), fabulous! [Edited 1/4/13 11:48am] RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

Well, since you brought it up, I recorded the show...

There's a newer group called State Cows that has a sort of Steely Dan/Toto sound. They released an album around 2010. Last year, I heard they were working on a new record, but haven't heard anything else about it. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Looks like they dropped a few singles in 2011..definitely steely Dan fans. 1 over Jordan...the greatest since

Looks like these dudes were a SD cover band for many years in their home country of Sweden.
Maybe closer to what's called the "West Coast" sound. (Some of their tracks feature Jason Scheff and Jay Graydon)
