He didn't let anyone fuck with his money after Alan Freed and 'em pulled what they pulled though it was protocol to do what they were doing then (which wasn't really fair tho).

Was Chuck as hardcore as say, James or Ike? "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

All I know about Chuck is that he once got into a scuffle with Johnnie Johnson over keeping his part of the money and Johnnie about fucked him up and Chuck gave him his share (and Johnnie's not a really confrontational guy). Other than that, I'm sure the only ruthless thing about Chuck was he carried his pistol just in case people didn't give him money upfront before he went onstage.

And as far as I know that's how some of the old school black performers rolled. Ray Charles, James Brown, Ike Turner, Solomon Burke (and other times, he charge performers for food in the South lol), Big Mama Thornton used to come to her record label's office with a pistol demanding money and got it. I think Little Richard did too (then again, he used to pack a lot of pistols during the cocaine fused 1970s period).

Sometime in 1944, Chuck Berry (government name Charles Edward Anderson Berry) dropped out of high school after fears of repeating the 10th grade for a third time and he got bored of life in middle class St. Louis so he and two of his friends wanted to make a permanent move to California. Soon their car broke down and since they were broke, they decided the best thing to do was to rob folks so they robbed at three shops and stole someone's car. They almost about got away with it when they decided to stop and head back to St. Louis. Midway through they tried to stop at a restaurant. Before 1954, no blacks could get in the restaurants in St. Louis so they decided to rob again and got caught by police. They sent 17-year-old Chuck to serve time in prison for ten years but he left after three for good behavior on his 21st birthday. Chuck didn't start his music career until 1952. And considering it was his first sentence, you'd think the judge would've been more lenient but these were the days when young black men were looked on as nothing but thugs to older white folks so they gave them harsher sentences.

Well technically no but you can afford a good lawyer these days if you're lucky. Lucky thing for Chuck he only got out of it in less than three years.
