It wasn't a hit and that bummed me out. I figured Lenny was just about over. Couple months later Fly Away was a massive smash, and I'm glad to say I was quite wrong smile

And yes, 5 had some absolutely killer material.

This was the first single off of 5 and its the one that pulled me in. I thought that this was a precursor to the "funk/sooul" album he stated was his next project even way back then.

This beat and delivery is smooth/dope. I Want To Fly Away overtook this jam which I think is better.

Agree smile , yet i saw the reviews.. and it seemed when it came out people where harsh confused

Idk 5 is a good album to me cause it's very versatile!

There are smooth R&B style tracks like this, old school rock/funk type with Fly Away, straight up funk with it's your life.

Pop with i belong to you, black velveteen was electro as hell...

Thinking About You which is about his deceased mother is a great ballad.

Idk the album has very many different sounds & themes.... plus his remake of American Woman was big around the time.

And American Woman was hue to.. I Belong to you got some air & video play it.

I remember that was my sentiment too. I was really surprised Fly Away became such a huge hit. I had thought it was just another album track and probably didn't even consider it single-worthy.

It's a nice song, but compared to the other material on that amazing album, it's pale in comparison and gets stuck in your head to the point of annoyance. I think super soul fighter and some other uptempo songs with the horns (the titles escape me right now) would have been better. I'm glad black velveteen was released though, it's one of his best.

I agree, I never thought that much of Fly Away. It's a little corny. Lenny said he wasn't even going to put it on the record, but a good friend convinced him he should put it on - certainly gave Lenny's career a much-needed boost. I always wondered if that 'good friend' was Prince.

I bought this record thinking that this was the long awaited "funk" record that Lenny was bragging about for so long. I was wrong but I ended up enjoying most of it anyway.

I think "5" is the last good record he put out.

I really love Black And White America. I had it for a while before I even listened to it. I think the albums between that and 5 were so forgettable, I just bought them out of habit.

I really like Lenny boxed

ome bad lyrics, but damn it had some great chorus & melodies... but i know the album is messy.

Messy int he sense that Lenny was trying to remake Again like 8 times on that album lol

Baptism pooptoast

It Is Time had a few good tracks but was kind of zzzz

So i can actually agree that a lot of his post 5 material is spotty as hell.

I think that Lenny is a fairly strong album and I quite like It Is Time for a Love Revolution too. Baptism...well, I really like "California" and "Flash." "Where Are We Runnin'?" is okay but as the lead single it was pretty forgettable. The rest of it is very patchy. There are some decent songs but the album never really grabs me. For me Baptism is his only stinker circa 2000-present.

Though I really dig LLR, Mama, 5, And BaWA, I also really dig Circus. Yes it's weird, dark, and not so radio friendly, but idc. I like it. cool

Tunnel Vision might just be the funkiest song he's ever done. And Can't Get You Off My Mind...for a dude that has 50 excellent songs, that is one awesome song.

That was my first Lenny album! i recall buying the album around 2005ish? when i was a freshman in high school.

I was thinking it was all going to be hard rock tunes, but after Are you gonna go my away.. every song was a slow ballad.

It took me awhile to dig that, but i do!

Believe

Heaven Help

Come On & Love Me

Black Girl

Are great great songs cool

Lenny is so underrated confused people really give him a lot of shit.
