Do you think it's a record company issue that's constantly holding it up?

I just don't see any other reason that would make sense. Folks keep saying that he has BEEN doing tracks and yadda yadda yadda, he named the title of the album (James River) like what 3 or 4 years ago? Something in the water doesn't compute.

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

If it was down to these two things and that is a big IF, I would guess the latter. From everything I've read, dude has plenty of material to condense down to a solid cohesive album. So, I highly doubt that he has nothing. He's eventually going to have to take that plunge and release something though. He sure is trying the patience of his label in the meantime lol

I pray that he's still healthy and strong and if so.....release the freakin record!

After his amazing performance on the BET awards last summer, I thought for sure he would release an album. It's a mystery as to why not and very disappointing to his fans too.

Could be. Record labels always give artists slave contracts anyway. You're binded to a label and sometimes you can't deliver. So in rebellious retaliation, you defy the label's orders. That could be what's going on here. (Same with Lauryn and Erykah, the latter to a more lesser extent).

Well to the people thats saying D Angelo dont have new material obviously havent seen him live or looked at his recent concert footages because he is playing at least 3-4 new songs. He has enough music to come out with an album tomorrow if that was something he really wanted to do.

People always tryna put people down. I am just happy that he got his life together and finally came back. ALL of yall doubted this man and called him over and he came back and slapped all you motherf%ckers in the face with a successful international tour and US tour. This dude havent had an album in over 10 years and still saling out tickets. I really want D angelo to come out with a CD but I am waiting and just happy he is well and came back with a good tour.

The question of why R&B is creatively challenged right now can be answered by the artists who are becoming well known for NOT releasing material or delaying releases. Including:

D'Angelo

Maxwell (where's the SUMMER part of his so-called trilogy?)

Erykah Badu (wasn't the 3d New Amerkyah album due this year?)

A ton of others. Maybe it's not all their fault, label and marketing issues may play a role.

And it is an artist's prerogative, not "obligation" per se, to release music or not to (so long as they face the legal consequences that may arise).

But it is frustrating to know that several of the great R&B artists have been sitting on the sidelines or taking extended timeouts for most of the 21st century.

Look, it's his prerogative to release music or not to release music. But if folk truly doubted him he'd have been irrelevant years ago. In fact, threads like these, as with the tour success, show quite the opposite.

Most of these folks on here are frustrated more than anything else that he could be putting out material right now that they could support. And that frustration is their prerogative as well.

I agree with all this but LOOK AT THE MUSIC INDUSTRY!

I am not saying that these artists should look for a pat on the back or an award when they release their music but lets be real its not like these artists are being heavily acknowledge or their hard work being rewarded instead we have no talented pop artists being labeled as R&B simply because their black.

Your right to a degree but a great deal of that has to do with the change in the music industry and in how R&B is becoming an obscure genre. If you are not a black POP star you are not going to be acknowledge as R&B. Artists like Usher, Beyonce, Rihanna, Chris Brown is what the industry calls R&B although they all make pop music. None of those artists you mentioned are pop stars so they will never get the credit they rightfully deserve album out or not.

Also, unlike those pop stars, they exactly CREATE music and not looking to throw together any old thing just for popularity.

30 years ago these artists may very well have been titans. But many times, the "R&B artist" was the "pop artist" on the strength of their work. Doesn't quite work that way anymore. But in terms of "hard work," that goes again to the frustration. If they're making good music that's not being released they're cutting down trees in an empty forest, so to speak. And I don't think that's entirely the industry's fault.

Respectfully, to me it's a distinction without much of a difference. Stevie Wonder was a pop star. Marvin Gaye was a pop star. The Motown Stable were pop stars. Not to mention MJ or Prince or Janet. They made their music and it gained popularity.

The problem is that some artists put out so few records that they can't rightfully be labeled at all.

Also, unlike those pop stars, they exactly CREATE music and not looking to throw together any old thing just for popularity.

Used to be that could be a formula for success for R&B artists. But no more. They are treated as relics or novelties.

But the flip side of your argument is that these artists' followings are comprised of the VERY PEOPLE who apprecaite their inclination to create.

There's really not a right or wrong to this, just many facets.

But I've never really seen an era where so many of the leading voices of a genre just disappear for years, even a decade or more, between albums.

It's so unusual to see so many leaders sit on the sidelines for so long.

Right, namepeace. Past titans like Ray Charles, James Brown, Aretha, B.B., etc., whoever, would release an album every year and always stayed on stage. They were always creative. With artists of today, it's a very different ball field and usually the artist will have tons of work sitting on the shelves without thinking of releasing it, you hardly see them onstage unless it's for a package concert festival especially here in the US. D'Angelo probably has like 200 songs at this point but we hear little of an album coming out. Like I said, they seem to take Stevie Wonder's example of waiting for 200 years before they put an album out.

I agree with your points and I didnt entirely blame it on the industry as well but the industry has fault in it and to me there is a distinction between an R&B and pop artist. Although Michael, Prince, Janet were pop stars especially the latteer they did sing enough to be called R&B artists. MJ even started out as R&B and did many genres Its not like they casually did one R&B song on each album lol and they sung many genres so I dont think that was a fair comparision. I cant say the same for Chris Brown, Rihanna and company etc.

I do agree with all you said though. It does leave a void when these artists take LONG breaks like this. The only excuse I can come up with is artistic reasons but for some of these artists thats not the case. Its VERY sad how artists like D angelo and Lauryn Hill have not came out with an album in over a decade and they were the leading voices of a genre/era.

Steve Wonder WAS NOT POP. I"LL REPEAT NOT POP.

D'Angelo better thank baby Jesus his career wasn't during the Wonder era because he would've been dropped, kick to the curb, thrown to the chicken and pigs, stuck with a fork because he's done. Really he's in keeping with his generation attitude, they don't have a work ethic, and they don't follow through on pretty anything they do. Damn near everything they do is fuck-up... they seem to do that very well. Cry when shit doesn't go their way and self destruct when they have a loaf of bread under each arm. Pathetic.
