Michael was the FIRST to turn the music video into a artform and popularize the medium. Regardless whether he was technically the VERY first or not HE WAS THE FIRST to make the music video into a medium, those other videos I would hardly even define as a music video which is why he is commonly noted to being the first and to be honest he deserves that title because those other videos by those other black artists were not really real music videos.

Somebody standing in the middle of a damn floor lip singing, aint no damn music video The ONLY MAN that could do that is MJ and he did that in Rock With You and still made it entertaining and iconic.

Why can't every song be so great that people would want to buy it if you could release it as a single?. So I always tried to strive for that. That was the purpose for the next album.

Most pop and R&B albums had a lot of filler. When you have an album in which each song had chart potential, it added to the sales of the album as much as it did the singles. No one really expounds on that part. Every song on that album was top 40 potential. That's why Epic kept releasing single after single to keep the album at number-one or in the top ten at least. How else can we explain Adele's 21. Some call it boring but there were songs that had as much chart potential and people kept playing them, i.e., it led to people buying the album. That's why Thriller was so successful. Of course the minimal promotion MJ took with it (Motown 25, the three videos) added to it as well.

I think it was because the tracks were produced in a way where it wouldn't be dismissed as filler material. That's what killed the momentum of albums in those days. Back before Thriller, there were exceptions (Tapestry, What's Going On, etc.).

Videos were part of the marketing. Dance-wise, I think how it changed dance was that it forced a lot of artists, who were dance oriented or not, to add dancing to videos. That's why Madonna and Janet got popular... thanks to the dancing in Michael's videos. Many in the R&B world that were older than Michael were actually upset over that.

Oh, I know, my dad (from rock world) think about MJ as a "universal evil" because, in his opinion, he had a negative impact on the world of music, because it is with his filing began appearing "mediocrities like Madonna, Britney, etc."
+ MJ has helped to reduce the line between rock and pop music.

I also agree with this.

It had some negative affects. I think with anything there is always going to be a pro and a con. It is important for any singer or someone who calls themself a artist to concentrate on crafting their music and pushing creatively with that first and then the video. Music first and then video.

However, I dont think its fair if someone was to blame Michael specfically because he was a artist who worked hard to craft his music LIKEWISE perfoming LIKEWISE in his music videos.

Long time ago, I considered this album to be both a blessing and a curse. And it was...and is.

The industry is always looking for something to stick and for many Michael's videos and the way he did them inspired the industry to make everyone like that. That means if you were not cut out for videos or didn't have the steps or the looks, you were not marketable according to the labels. That was a response to "Thriller" and what it had done for Michael. We can also blame this on Walter Yetnikoff and Michael himself who envisioned what each video would be like to the point they weren't even videos but mini-films (after the release of the "Thriller" video). But everyone used "Beat It" as a step-up and tried to get Beat It-type videos out of some of its artists.

Video Can you feel it (Michael created the video's concept) was created in the same year, and also has an obvious artistic value ... but the videos of the album Thriller - is really a huge step forward in the production of video, it's obvious.

^ Actually Can You Feel It (the video) came out in, I believe, December of 1980 or January of 1981, a good eight months before MTV was even on anyone's radar.

From what I understand, Mike came up with the idea for an all music video network and sold it to Warner Brothers. But he didn't create MTV itself.
