Yeah plus the industry needs to stop blabbering on about the next "legend-to-be", that's what kills these artists who probably do have potential to do better things. I'm sure D hearing he's the "next Prince" or "next Marvin Gaye" killed him too in the industry. Plus "that video" lmao

?uestlove must have been a horrible friend to have. Calling him the "promised one", "savior" of soul or whatever.

razz

That's a lot of pressure. Indeed. A lot of folks in his shoes would have frozen under that weight. It's the same weight Prince felt after Purple Rain, and Stevie probably felt after every album he released in the 1970s. But they kept making music in their prime and accepted whatever came.

I wish D and some of the others had done so, but I understand pressure, self-imposed and otherwise, well enough to not (completely) judge him. He works on his own time and pace, as do so many of us.

Well I think we may be looking at the record industry from an overly romantic viewpoint. We seriously want to believe if you work hard, practice, have the material and talent then the album should drop, everyone makes money and all are happy. Obviously with the D'Angelos , Maxwells and Lauryn Hills "something else" must be going on for this NOT to be happening. The machine can put anyone back on top if they want to so why would any artist deny themselves that? There must be some sort of "conditions" that these artists are not willing to comply with in exchange for getting the record out IMO.

^ I did mention they signed slave contracts... don't know about Erykah but who knows what the deal was like when D'Angelo signed his.

I don't know about 'D'Angelo, but I think it's a safe bet that Lauryn Hill will NEVER release a new album lol For whatever reason, she just doesn't seem interested in doing so.

AGREE.

Alot of dirty stuff goes on behind the scenes, thats why not sure why some people are putting all the blame on these artists solely.

Had tickets to see him in Cologne last summer....POS car died on the Autobahn...if D'angelo's past record is anything to go by, I'll be paying for my next tickets with my retirement money biggrin He seriously needs to drop something soon, Brown Sugar and Voodoo were amazing, so were the new songs played on his tour...RELEASE IT!

I still stand by with my theory that James River was almost done (like some people close to him have claimed online) but that he scrapped the record when Jesse J joined his band so that he could record an entire new album with his input in it. it really makes you wonder how good James River may be if he was forced to release it today... I heard the outtake 1000 Deaths (or whatever its called) it seemed pretty good! On a side note, Voodoo is getting a vinyl reissue!

What is up with this brother? Another year.....no new project?

I like his first 2 cds were classic jams. people keep telling me about his bootleg and unreleased tracks. I'm still waiting to hear these. I don't think his comeback performances were that great. I think his voice sounded terrible. He is another 90's artist that has fallen by the way side like.... lauryn hill, jodeci, dru hill, ginuwine, ...[ or insert any other 90's r&b artist ]

Did you see him in concert? His puts on a damn good show and his voice sounds great to me.

I think people are just brushing him as "over" because he hasnt came out with an album. Obviously, he is not over because if he was over, he would not able to sell out shows in UK and in America after a decade of non music/tour activity neutral

I just wished he did more. Maybe he has this fright that the music he does is not good enough to be put out. neutral Plus he has that Pentecostal thing with him. He's probably spooked by the effects his career may have if he puts it out and loses that focus that he had during the mini-tour he was on.

How was his voice on that one? He's been doing a lot of James Brown type guttural singing lately...

I LOVE D Angelo and I really wish he come back with an album as well! BUT I think sometimes the whole calling him over and just straight dissing this man is OLD. Dude has issues just like we all have. He has been through ALOT this past decade and I am just happy that he decided to tour and get his feet wet again.

I really believe he is going to come out with a album. It might not be this year but that doesnt mean its never going to happen. I think people can be more encouraging instead of just bashing, we dont know what his gone through, we also dont know what his reasons are for not rushing to put out an album. I honestly think the situation is alot more complicated.

If the album is going to come out it's most likely going to be like the Chinese Democracy of soul. Good for the most part, but overproduced and sounding like it belongs to an entirely different time period.

Some of the new songs I heard at his shows didnt sound overproduced and exactly sound Prince inspired. He has the right material and direction, he just needs to RELEASE IT lol

Well, live versions played earlier on aren't usually what the final recorded versions will be like.

Yeah, I was really impressed with "Charade" myself. It's very promising, but I'm curious to find out how it mixes with the rest of the material on the album.

He should just get a soundcloud account and post the music on there so we can decide whether or not this will fit on his album. That way, he wouldn't go through issues of how to present it. But I don't see that happening.
