I think the term "acid jazz" came out in the late 1980's, but not sure. There was a label named that, I think it was UK based. The Brand New Heavies early stuff was on the Acid Jazz label, but in the US, their records were released on Delicious Vinyl, I believe that is how N'Dea Davenport got in the group. She was singing hooks on rap records from DV acts, and the Heavies were from overseas.

To me, the "acid jazz" music seemed based on early 1970's "soul jazz" acts like Donald Byrd and pre-disco funk, which was sometimes jazzy.

the phrase was first used in the late 80s by giles peterson, but it was mainly an early to mid 90s movement, or at least that was when it peaked. the term was inspired by acid house music that was big in 87/88 which is when the term was first used. the record label started around the same time

I was right in2 Acid Jazz in the 90s, so so mega to dance to. Looked through my concert stubs recently & Jamiroquai r one of the bands that I've seen live the most, apart from Supergrass. First saw Jamiroquai live in Nov 1994! They were so good at the Barrowlands. Remember being backstage at the Barrowlands wi Brand New Heavies, chatting to N'dea Davenport in the dressing room as she brushed her long hair! Also remember the guys in Brand New Heavies were kinda acting like jerks. Think me & my mate went clubbing wi them. Then JTQ- so funky! Got up on stage at the Garage to go-go dance! Ha ha Ahh, those were the days.

i saw BNH at the barras 94. and jamiroquai at SECC not long after. i managed a club around the time and we had the first and only streelsoul/acid jazz club in scotland and we were offered jamiroquai to play live for £500 around the time of his 2nd single but the owner wouldn't give me money for a band he'd never heard of and we got a glasgow funk band to play instead. bad move. back then if you called numbers on the record labels you got to speak to people like giles peterson, who was very supportive of our club night. i also spoke to people like farley and heller and other boys own people from time to time on the phone for our dance nights

there used to be a crowd of us that used to go clubbing thursday to sundays, with thursdays being mostly rare groove/funk/disco type nights, friday and saturdays were house/garage and on a sunday we went to a gay friendly night that played a mix of the poppy end of house/garage and a bit of kylie, madonna and disco stuff mixed in, but not in a cheesy way. that group of people were into all sorts of stuff like acid jazz and prince. there used to be one or two great 70s disco clubs that were great fun and a break from the house/garage that was the main club style for us. i also used to go through to the tunnel club on sundays a lot. used to spend a fortune on designer gear at the warehouse and ichi ni san and cruise and corniche and stuff like that though. was a right label snob and it cost a fortune trying to look different every night

i only saw james at the live8 thing. i was at both edinburgh and london shows. london was hot and sunny and had pink floyd, the who, elton john, REM, paul macartney, u2, george michael, robbie williams and mariah carey and edinburgh had the proclaimers and will young whilst it was cold and raining

i used to manage a venue in edinbugh so we had all sorts of nights and dj's. we had a lot of the big names in the club, sasha, boy george, kevin saunderson etc. there was a great 70s rare groove funk night run by a guy when he was a student who now has a book publishers in town that put out a prince book (his dad was CEO of ITV or something like that - he acted like a broke hippy but parents were loaded). i also dj'ed at other venues around town. i used to do the prince nights in edinburgh and dj'ed at most of the uk prince nights the last 20 years. the next thing planned is the prince weekender in london, 3 nights of prince in a row next june 7,8,9

but yeah i was at all the prince scottish gigs, including the garage aftershow, celtic park, meadowbank. saw a good few gigs at the barras etc, weller, the the, scissor sisters, primal scream etc
