her voice was amazing-one of the purest sounds I have ever heard. I think it really hurt them that they came out in the 70s-so much of that decade is just dismissed as cheese.

I know people that dismiss them because of this view. They hear a song like "Top of the World" and dismiss it as Disney like but never give their music the chance it deserves to be heard. Karen Caprenter is one of the most amazing voices in music history. heart

Their stuff was actually very deep. True they did record some kid-oriented material ("Sing a Song", "Rainbow Connection", etc.) but their adult material was more sophisticated. I hear a lot of jazz influences in their work.

I always thought she had a beautiful voice, and turned a phrase with some strange magic similar to one William Smokey Robinson. They both could sing about some scanky business and make it sound like they were busy Baptising baby angels.

I've always thought of her, not as a "singer" but, as a musician who sang beautifully. Pulling her out front to be a "singer" is what allegedly led to her eating disorder.

She could have sung from behind her drums day and night for all I care. :luv:

I just finished watching the CBS depiction of her life and it was very heartbreaking what she went through. sad I also admired how immensely close she was with her brother and parents.

I just think she has such a beautiful voice which was so unique.

I would definitly place her in the top 10 best female vocalist of all time. Why do you think she never gets alot of credit in the vocal department? Before watching the movie, which by the way her brother helped in making, I had no idea she played the drums. She exactly played the drums exceptionally well.

I also really love the sound "The Carpenters" had which I felt went on to inspire alot of other singers and groups. It just seems like she along with her brother does not get alot of credit I dont know if it is because they were a brother and sister act or what.

What are your thoughts?

[Edited 11/18/12 7:26am]

I wholeheartedly agree with your post. Karen Carpenter is definitely in my top 10 of female vocalists. Hell, I would say vocalists period!! I came to this epiphany after watching the same documentary. I always liked her when I was a kid, but, you know, being black, that just would not fly. So I kept it hidden and really never thought about it much. But then I saw this docu, and was like, damn she has a nearly perfect voice!! I've always been affected listening to her voice in songs that would be cringeworthy if anyone else was singing it, but she made everything seem like it was just...real. I have, I think, every song they made on my iPod, and I used to hurridly skip over songs from them when I had friends in the car, but now, I actually look for them to explain why the should give them a listen, and respect!

Let me say someting that may get me court marshalled.

The Carpenters were the complete and entire shit.

Everybody liked them even Keith Richards with his rude buhind.

And as far as Im concerned Karen's voice was just as good as Whitney Houston and even had more depth to and feeling to it. Just because Whitney wailed like an overthetop female Tarzan at times doesnt mean shit imo. If anything Houston was technical and Karen had warmth.

Karen's voice was pure bliss. I can see how she wouldn't appeal to everyone, but I can't see anyone denying she had a great voice. Sure, she doesn't holler which is what some people like, she was just clean and pure sounding.

I can't believe she's been gone as long as she has sad

Songwriters: NICHOLS, ROGER S. / WILLIAMS, PAUL H.

We've only just begun to live,
White lace and promises
A kiss for luck and we're on our way.
We've just begun.

Before the rising sun we fly,
So many roads to choose
We start out walking and learn to run.
And yes, We've just begun.

Sharing horizons that are new to us,
Watching the signs along the way,
Talking it over just the two of us,
Working together day to day
Together.

And when the evening comes we smile,
So much of life ahead
We'll find a place where there's room to grow,
And yes, We've just begun.

This thread brings up an interesting point: what people consider "singing".

Yes, you are right - good point.

Hollerin' isn't singing. What Britney Spears and the like do isn't singing either. Karen knew how to sing. Her voice was lovely.
