Could 2 Live Crew really rap, tho? Or were they just a novelty act? "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

Their leader saw $$$ in the sex industry. But they STARTED as great hip-hop group.

Listen to a clean version of 1987's Move Somethin' and you'll realize they were an awesome hip hop group.

They were a great Hip-Hop act.
That's like saying Gangsta rappers were novelty acts. PRINCE: Always and Forever

No its not... 2 Live Crew were dope at what THEY DID however it wasnt gangsta rap. There lyrics centered around sex, explicit content and vulgarity. They hardly talked about street life. Im not tryna diss but lets be real about the music they made.

No, I'm not saying they were gangster rappers. I'm saying you can't label them novelty acts on what they talked about, because that would be like naming every gangsta artist as a novelty act cause all they talk about is shoot em up bang, bang and crack. PRINCE: Always and Forever

You have a point, LittleBLUECorvette. I never liked 2Live Crew, they're a little much with those nasty ass lyrics. "I know he'll be disgusted when he sees your pussy busted"

There novelty acts because neither of them really could rap outside of the content that they were doing and I wouldnt define any of them as talented MC's. They relied heavily on being controversial and vulgar in their music in order to garner attention and to sale which is different from lets say NWA who were exactly bringing alot of taboo issues related to discrimination, corrupt legal system etc although that was not the only thing they talked about, they each had real talent though.

2LC wouldn't have survived without Luke and big booty tricks lol

I have to admit...this song is a guilty pleasure of mine
brings back alot of crazy memories of my junior year in high school

2LC wasn't even close to gangsta rappers. They were a party rap/bass group lol it was all about that BASS man. The Miami bass that is lol I admit without it I wouldn't have enjoyed the 95 South version of "Whoot There It Is" lol

I totally understand where both of you are coming from. I guess the question then becomes how do you distinguish between novelty and branding, as it seems. I saw in some interviews a while ago where Luke was explaining why he chose to go the sex route as it pertaine to the hip-hop soundscape at the time. He made music for the adults doing their thing in the clubs and on the beaches and pool parties. If you grew up in that era, or better yet went to COLLEGE during that time, you were thankful for Uncle Luke. Good times, man. Good times. I will NEVER forget the first time I heard this song! I was in JUNIOR high school, at the local skating rink which was an 80s staple back then. At 10pm it was skates off and the place transitioned into a teen night club of sorts. When this song came on the place went NUTS and there wasn't a person in the building that wasn't up dancing and shouting the chorus.
Like they said in the song I posted earlier in this thread, "...we are here for your dancing pleasure!"
This same night was the first time I also saw "Under the Cherry Moon", rented a VS tape to watch before going to the rink. The year was 1987. [Edited 11/18/12 9:54am] I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

That song caused quite a ruckus I remember in my junior year of high school,I took a journalism class and the teacher was really cool.On certain days, she would let us listen to the radio during class. One guy put in a cassette.....a mixed tape featuring alot of songs that were popular at the time.Everything was cool, but then "We Want Some P****" came on.My teacher went berserk She got up,snatched the cassette out of the boombox and made a harsh comment about "some of you guys don't have no taste!"...LOL...it was hilarious.

Maybe y'all should have played "Throw that D" instead. My mom's boyfriend at the time used to bump that 2 Live Crew at the time also, so mom heard all the tracks right there in her own living room. She thought it was all hilarious actually. Then my cousins, her nieces, started some low-budget social club/ sorority-like group (whose main purpose was to hang out in my aunt/ their mom's juke joint and TRY hard to look cute and be sexy ) and one of my cousins had "Throw The D" on one of the club's t-shirts. To this day mom is still laughing about that, in a "It was all so tacky and shit," kind of way.
RIP to my cousin and her foolishness. 1962-1992 I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

In fairness, Brother Marquis & Fresh Kid Ice were THE only 2 out of the 4 members of 2 Live Crew that were rappers.

Terrible rappers. The best thing about them was their 12" cover with Adrianna Sage on it.

They weren't great rappers but they had a way with a catchy chorus and a simple melodic hook. And they could make nasty schoolyard rhymes that were funny and memorable. I don't know that they were musically great but they were kind of perfect for the kind of group they were trying to be.
Somebody say HEEEEY! | |

Compared to most of today's MCs, not really.
Compared to most MC's of their time, they weren't the best, but not the absolute worst either. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

Doesn't matter whether they could rap or not. Their music was jamming and that's the only thing that matters. Rapping with no good music behind it is nothing but "poetry"
I bought all their albums from the beginning all the way until around 1996 or 1997 when I stopped buying them. There's only so many times that you can hear "Planet Rock" or "Electric Kingdom" mixed in every way possible before you get tired of it. Andy is a four letter word.
