How would you rank Kurt Cobain as a songwriter? Personally, I think he is one of the best-he had a real talent with words, witness his superb lyrics. "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

His songwriting is imo what made Nirvana great(Besides Dave's awesome drumming)
Kurt was not a very good guitar player.. in fact he was messy. And his vocals where a lot to...
But his writing was amazing & made the vocals seem even more tortured & profound Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

I don't think Kurt was a bad singer-his voice really fit Nirvana's songs and he was good at covering the works of others-the unplugged cd is proof of that "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

Great songwriter! His writing abilities are far greater than his singing, but that's what made nirvana so great that it wasnt perfect. He's one of my fav sogwriters! When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace -Jimi Hendrix

I've never like Nirvana musically or vocally, but there's no denying Kurt was an awesome songwriter.

All these years later when I think he did not have enough time to establish himself as one of the all time greats, I hear Rape Me on the radio and its a perfect song. So I don't know if he has the complete body of work to compare to other greats, but what he has is about as good as it could possibly be. My Legacy

I was watching an interview with Courtney Love and she was asked what Kurt's involvement was in Hole's Live Through This, and Courtney said basically nothing. Kurt sang backup on "Asking For It", but it was watching him e.g. write "Rape Me" in twenty minutes, that pissed her off and challenged/inspired her as a songwriter for that album.

He is positively a better songwriter than Neeyo or Drake could ever be. I use them as examples of posers who have horrid songwriting skills yet sell millions of records. There are many others just as guilty. Kids these days are being duped and they don't even realize it. Rock N Roll is dead, now let's all commence to shake our booty's. It really does smell like teen spirit.

I took Kurt Cobain's death pretty hard.
I remember at the time of his death and the local news was trying to get a story out of it but it backfired. They cruised local "hot spots" and hangouts where X'ers frequented and asked them what they thought and they pretty much got shrugs and "I could never understand him anyways" type responses.
He didn't want to be a spokesman for his generation and it turned out he wasn't.
Then the worst thing happened; After the media-cool surrounding Generation X burned off and the generation moved from disaffected to complacent, Generation X became just like everybody else.

I imagine that's true, and it's a really good album. His influence is all through it, too. So much so that people think he really did write some of those songs. And even if that rumor is not true, it shows how stylish and influential he was all the same. My Legacy

He's one of the best of his era, I think. They're not overly crafty but they're memorable and leave a strong impression. There were other bands from the underground scene that I liked better at the time, because they were more extreme, but it's the classic rock simplicity in his best tunes that makes them a lot more fun than Big Black or the Jesus Lizard today. Those bands were fun to see live, they were extremely powerful, but the records don't hold up as well. The underground scene was still very wary of things getting too "pop" even though we all grew up on our moms' Beatles and Stones records.
And he was simply miles ahead of most of the bands that became famous in the grunge era. Some of the others were maybe craftier but that's not what I really want in loud-ass rock and roll writing.
