The Prince album that Prince should have made.

Brilliant album, great track.

You should try and track down the b-sides from this album, they are just as mad and funky as the album tracks.

absolutely love beck, a true genre defying artist. "odelay" was such an influence on me in my younger years, especially when my love for prince was waining.

had the pleasure of seeing him live a few years ago, during the gig i remember a dinner table being laid out with plates, cutlery, glasses of wine, and the band sat around it, tapping out a tune on the glasses and plates. the glasses were filled with different levels of wine to create pitch and melody.

it's moments like that that define genius.

n yeah midnite vultures is hella funky too.

don't play me...i'm over 30 and i DO smoke weed....

I have a bootleg video of his band doing that. It's a small audience studio performance, Austin City Limits or something...I forget. will have to hunt it out.

Crazy.

Thank you for posting.

The one I was on about was at Rehearsal Hall in Toronto, I found this YT clip of it, quality is not great though.

I really can't listen to these "Prince" tracks of his anymore. I certainly listened to this album a lot when it came out, but my appreciation of it has diminished greatly over time.

His falsetto became annoying to listen to after a while and the biggest problem with the songs are that they are more musical jokes than serious attempts at songs ("Debra" and "Peaches and Cream" in particular). Yeah, sure. They have their redeeming qualities and a lot of interesting stuff going on, but the whole album relies too much on irony. I remember when people were calling it "the best Prince album since (insert arbitrary year before 1993 here)" and I just have to raise my eyebrows at those comments these days.

There are several songs on this album that are closer to his own style that work a whole lot better ("Nicotine & Gravy", "Broken Train"). I think "Sexx Laws" is the best of the funk tracks, although a bit of a mess due to the banjo stuff on it. More of a nod towards Rick James than Prince, I guess.
