New Order - help wanted

Can anyone tell me about a good compilation cd of New Order?

If not, which albums should I get first. I remember loving "regret", "blue monday", "true faith", etc... back in the day but I really want to know/listen more of them.

I have downloaded some songs already and I am starting to like the group more and more recently.

Thanks in advance smile

'Technique' is a cool album from the 90s.
But they've just released a 'Retro' greatest hits album with loads of their past hits and remixes on which is supposed to be good.
But there is also a 'Best of New Order' album that was released a few years ago which would probably sort you out.

Compilations: Substance 1987, The Best Of New Order

Albums: Low Life, Technique, Republic, Brotherhood, Power, Corruption & Lies

Also worth checking out is "Electronic", the superb debut from Bernard and Johnny Marr, who teamed up and formed a band of sorts called, urm, Electronic. It's the best New Order album New Order never made.

If you're willing to shell out for the box-set, get it. I just bought it a couple weeks ago and I haven't stopped listening to it yet. 4 discs each put together by a friend of the band with a different theme each: Pop, Club, Fan and Live. It's a great collection.

However, if you're not ready for that kind of commitment, the Best-of released in the late 90's is a good all around compilation of all the hits you would need.

Tron is the resident New Order expert - he can let you know what to get first.

I recommend Substance first (to sorta satisfy any taste for "hits"), then Technique and Brotherhood. I'm not a big fan of Republic (not as much anyway).

Yay! You got it! Isn't it the best? I haven't been able to stop listening to it either. It really highlights their different sides. They've become one of my favorite bands in just a couple years.

Now, for Garganta. It depends on how far you see your obsession with them going. There's nothing more gratifying than a good box set and 'Retro' is one of the best ever released. If you get it, make sure you go to a store that includes the 5th disc for free. You'll probably need to go to an independent store for that. Otherwise, I'd say get both 'Substance' and 'The Best Of'. Together, you'll get all their biggest songs and the killer 12" remixes and b-sides that they're so notorious for. All of the Factus '82 EP tracks alone are worth the cost of Substance. Finally, I would definitely get their newest album 'Get Ready'. I was thoroughly blown away by that one and they haven't lost anything with age. It's great.

Glad you discovered this amazing, brilliant band! Have fun. biggrin

My brother and I combined 'Substance' and 'The Best Of' and it makes for a killer compilation. We left off the instrumental and alternate versions and kept just the core songs. Here's a list of what you'll be getting just from buying those 2 sets.

Disc 1:

1. Ceremony
2. In A Lonely Place
3. Dreams Never End
4. Everything's Gone Green
5. Procession
6. Mesh (aka Cries and Whispers)
7. Hurt
8. Temptation
9. Age of Consent
10. Blue Monday
11. Confusion
12. Thieves Like Us
13. Perfect Kiss
14. Lonesome Tonight
15. Love Vigilantes

Disc 2:

1. Subculture
2. Shellshock
3. State of the Nation
4. Bizarre Love Triangle
5. True Faith
6. 1963
7. Touched by the Hand of God
8. Fine Time
9. Vanishing Point
10. Run
11. Round and Round
12. World in Motion
13. Regret
14. World
15. Ruined in a Day
16. Let's Go (Nothing For Me)

they just released a new "Best Of" - called International, I believe... it has stuff from their entire career, including their most recent studio album.

This has, pretty much, everything you'd need. "Substance" (both the New Order version and the Joy Division version) are a wonderful place to begin enjoying the bands.

International is crap other than the artwork. It has too many gaps.

Plus, they have so many non-albums singles, b-sides and EP tracks. So many of their biggest and best songs were never on any regular album.

If you get it, make sure you go to a store that includes the 5th disc for free. You'll probably need to go to an independent store for that.

Tron, what's on the Fifth Disc ?
