Cool thread. Interesting to know when y'all got the game onto the radar. Can't help but feel old tho.
My first memories of hip-hop were on "mix tapes" (real ones) from guys who had been in the military (hence stationed in diff cities world-wide).
Caz, Theodore, Flash.....all amongst the sounds we heard (only ID'd in later years). In 77-79, it just felt "hip" to be in "the know".
Saw Kurtis live in 80 (opened for Cameo.....was in the front row.....holy crap..lol). It was Kurtis & "The Breaks" that blew it all up, world-wide, honestly. Funk Is It's Own Reward

"I used to live downtown, 129th street/Convent everything's upbeat..."
or
"Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww no rapper can rap/Quite like I can/I'll take muscle bound man/And put his face in the sand..."
or
"Funky fresh, dressed to impress/Ready to party..."
can't remember which came first. "That's when stars collide. When there's space for what u want, and ur heart is open wide."

I got a fable that you need to listen to It's a funky little rhyme about a bitch or two One's Sharon the other ones Shawn I wanted to nut but which one do I want? Shawn said Easy let me fuck you blind And Sharon said E I want to blow your mind I said fuck it I know what should be done Just pull your panties down and I'll fuck the biggest one And then I get the other pussy put it in the frezzer So I can always have an on hold skezzer Yeah that's the ticket I'll do it like that So I told the hoes to take a big step back Took the zipper down eyes wide and said Here what Im gonna put inside Grab it like a rabbit, let's work it But I won't love you when I'm done I'll still be talkin' shit............
Easy E's "Still Talkin' Shit"
I use to sneak and listen to my brothers cassette tapes when I was a little kid in the 80's and he just happen to have Eazy's first solo album, needless to say the cursing and subject matter got my attention right away LOL!!

I definitely got some sneak listens to Eazy-E, NWA, and Too $hort around 1989, but never enough to have a verse memorized until I was much older.
