Tamia Appreciates Career Longevity; Celebrates a Successful Debut for "Beautiful Surprise"

Tamia released her fifth studio album, Beautiful Surprise, this week, and after 17 years in the business the singer tells ABC News Radio that being able to make music that people care about never gets old.

"I feel very grateful to be sitting here," Tamia says, adding "I'm happy that I get to do music that I love and to, you know, be here to promote it." For fans who suggest the singer doesn't get sufficient accolades for her music, Taa acknowledges, "Maybe, you know, I haven't blown [up]," but adds that "when they say something like 'underrated'... I do feel grateful that they...think about me like that and they want more for me and my music."

Thinking about her staying power in the industry, Tamia says, "I've seen a lot of artists come and go and it isn't because of lack of talent or whatever." Rather, says the wife to NBA basketball player Grant Hill, that's "certainly the way the music business is going now. It's not about an artist's career or the longevity of an artist. It's about, you know, having a hit today and you could be gone tomorrow."

As for Tamia, she seems to have a new hit on her hands. She recently tweeted her appreciation that Beautiful Surprise is the top R&B album on the iTunes' chart. It's the number 8 album on iTunes overall.

As evidence of the album's connection with fans, Tamia laughingly recalled an incident that happened as she was walking through an airport. The singer startled a fan listening to Beautiful Surprise. Tamia says, "the woman who was listening to it... she looks up and it must have been really freaky 'cause she see me as she's listening to it and then it was just like, yeah, you still feel good to hear your music being played. I don't think it gets old, no."
