"No Parking On the Dance Floor" sounds a lot like "Freakshow on the Dance Floor" by the Bar Kays.
Did they have the same writer or producer?
LOVE both songs btw. | |

I don't think they did. As you know, the Bar-Kays were known for "borrowing" riffs and music from others in the 80s.

Good to know, however. | |

Yeah, they did it a few times. "Son of Shaft" and "Your Place or Mine" were total rip offs from other songs.
Midnight Star is and will always be one of my favorite groups. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

One of my favorite bands. Never felt like they got their due. And definitely felt they got screwed by the press, when the Calloways "rocked the boat" and jumped ship. I'm really curious how Reggie and Vincent are portrayed by the rest of the band on that Unsung episode. Reggie has always come across to me like he's quite full of himself. Always felt like the others in the band were perfectly capable of writing and producing for themselves, but the press would constantly reference losing Reggie. MS was/is a great band, full of great musicians -- just don't see that much in the R&B field anymore. Melvin Gentry (co-lead singer) started as their drummer, as well as singing and playing guitar. That just seems unheard of nowadays. Miss these guys. I wore my Planetary Invasion cassette out (still my favorite of theirs). Got No Parking on vinyl for Christmas '83 and listened to it daily. Could not get enough of Electricity and Night Rider.

How can Son of Shaft be a ripoff when the title is self explanatory not to mention the band backed Isaac Hayes while at Stax and did covers of other songs(instrumentals) before Larry Dodson came on board. The band did borrow grooves from other bands but they always backed it up with their own records and live performances. As for Midnight Star they are a great band and still sound good live. If their is one criticism of the band it is that they repeated themselves a little during their heyday. You can easily get confused listening to tracks from No Parking On The Dance Floor and Planetary Invasion. Electricity, Freak A Zoid and Operator are all first cousins. Don't laugh at my funk
This funk is a serious joint

One of my favorite 80s R&B bands. They dominated the R&B world in 1983,with their hugely successful No Parking On The Dancefloor album. One big jam after another.Even non-singles like "Electricity","Playmates" and "Slow Jam" got alot of airplay. And they're still an amazing live act, too! I saw them in concert a few years ago and it was a powerful show. They still kick ass! The jeri curls are gone (lol),but the funk is still alive.

The Bar Kays notoriously "borrowed" from other people during this period

JabbaWockeeZ used their biggest hit in their live shows. At 0:41

One of the baddest groups of the 1980s. They were what we thought the future would sound like. Damn shame it didn't turn out that way.
