Purple audiophiles...I need your help! I've decided to invest in some high end (well, nothing over 300 ) headphones and want the ones with the absolute BEST sound quality and everything. The kind that audiophiles love. I don't even know where I'm supposed to begin, what brands are the best, etc... Purple Music is my drug and I'm jonesin!!!!!

Well I narrowed it down to 2: the Beyerdynamic DT 880 32 ohm and the AKG K702. I tried comparing them on the site but they are way too technical and I don't know shit about sound, etc.. (I just want the best quality sound for listening to mostly Prince and David Bowie).
Any opinions on which of these 2 would b better for listening to those two?
I feel stupid [Edited 10/19/12 14:24pm] [Edited 10/19/12 14:41pm] Purple Music is my drug and I'm jonesin!!!!!

I think you should go out and listen to them, and then make your choice. Both of them are good ones, it just boils down to personal preference in the end.
For what it's worth: I ended my quest with 150 euro Audio Technica ATH-M50 ones, even when my budget was up to 300 euro. They have very good reviews on the internet. I am still very happy with them, I use them both for mixing purposes in my homestudio and for listening music on my iPhone... RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

A few years ago at a trade show, I got lucky and won a set of these... "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

I've been chasing sound for over 40 years. The three hundred you are willing to spend, I can save your $260.00.
Go buy yourself some, Koss PortaPro. Yep, that's what I said. Some $40.00 headphones, they've been around for 40 years and still beat most of the headphones priced three hundred and up. I've listened through up-teem headphones and most of them didn't sound any better than Koss PortaPro, nor justified me paying premium price. Grant you, the style is so retro but Koss has enough sense not to fix what isn't broken. If you wanna style and profile with a brand name ( to say you've spent bucks) I'm sure you are aware the more popular brands being sported. For example, I'm not impress with Beats Series, in my opinion the bass is muddy and at high volumes their sound decays.
I own Audio-Technica ATH-M50's for my home music studio. They are excellent but they are studio monitor headphones,. Which means their frequency is flat; when someone is recording and/or mixing down they need to hear sound frequencies they wouldn't be able to discern if they had on pair of Koss's for example. That's cool if that is a sound you like or prefer. "Standard" headphones like audio speakers color the sound, in order to enhance it. Studio headphones/speakers give you the exactly what was recorded.
The other thing you should consider. Where will you being wearing your headphones? If you are a frequent traveler (bus, car, plane or train) than I would consider headphones with noise cancellation feature. Checkout this link. http://reviews.cnet.com/b...eadphones/
Another thing...
If you listen to your music primarily though iPod, MP3, Smartphone, and/or computer invest in a DAC (digital-to-analog converter) amplifier. What does it do? Simply put, it converts digital bits into the signal, with a more accurate reproduction of the original sound. I spoke about this in a previous thread here's that link with a pic - http://prince.org/msg/8/388714. I have another one FiiO 6 DAC the size of a iPod shuffle I use that for all of my portable devices. Ultimately, its what funkaholic said, go out and listen to different brands, your ears will tell you.
I think I gave more info than you wanted.
