Mick Jagger will co-produce a biopic on the late Godfather of Soul, James Brown, according to Deadline.com.

The currently-untitled project is being developed by Ron Howard collaborator Brian Grazer. The Help director Tate Taylor is in talks to helm the film.

Jagger is quoted as saying: "It's a great honor to be involved with a project as rich as the story of the legendary James Brown. He was a mesmerizing performer with a fascinating life."

The movie will chronicle Brown's rise as a music legend after growing up in poverty. The lead role hasn't yet been cast.

The project was first proposed before Brown's death in 2006.

with any luck, Jagger will make sure that the cheese level is toned down to a minimum

I'd like to nominate Phillip Edward Van Lear to play the lead role of Mr. Brown. I've seen him in the Kelsey Grammer series on Stars "Boss" and I believe he was in the TV drama "The Chicago Code". He was also the dead beat dad in Tyler Perry's "Meet The Browns."

I hope they take his story serious and do it right.

Hopefully Mick will be instrumental in chronicling (bring in Keef as a consultant) the severe thrashing The Stones took at the hands (feet & voice) of Mr. Brown during the T.A.M.I. Show.

In interviews, Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones has claimed that choosing to follow Brown & The Famous Flames was the biggest mistake of their careers, because no matter how well they performed, they could not top him.

I understand that statement but it's not a very qualified one. Jagger is producing which can mean he's funding it or finding the funding or putting the right ppl in place to make the film.

Shouldn't jump to conclusions.

The Rolling Stones is a band that was influenced maybe even more by black musicians than the white musicians that came before them. Mick Jagger lived through the same period of time and has first hand experience of what it was like to be a successful and a controversial musician in the 1960s and the 1970s.

'The Help' Director Tate Taylor To Helm James Brown Biopic

Of the many long brewing biopics in Hollywood, a movie about James Brown is among them. Spike Lee was once on board the project, with Wesley Snipes as his choice to play the lead, but that iteration has long since been taken off table. Can a powerhouse trio that includes "The Help" director Tate Taylor, super producer Brian Grazer and fan Mick Jagger help this one get on up? (Sorry, we had to).

They'll be giving it a try as all three are now behind the untitled project that will cover the life of the legendary R&B and soul performer. The project has a script from Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth ("Fair Game") for a picture that Grazer has been shepherding since 2006. Jagger -- whose own career was influenced by Brown (see image below) -- is lending his producing powers as well, while Taylor will direct. Of course, the question remains: who can possibly fill the role of The Hardest Working Man In Show Business?

Last year, Brown's daughter revealed that Eddie Murphy, Usher and uh, Chris Brown, were all possibilities/wishlist type folks, but not much has been heard since and no word if they are still candidates. It's always a tricky thing casting famous musicians -- going with name stars and unknowns have their own sets of pros and cons -- but undoubtedly, Grazer and co. will have their pick of the litter.

As for when it will shoot, your guess is as good as ours. This one has been brewing for so long now, that it's almost routine to get an update and then not hear anything again for a while. But hopefully, this will get on the good foot soon, as more James Brown is never a bad thing.

Jagger is proably more qualified to produce it than any black producer for a myriad of reasons. Siddown and be quiet.

Who cares it's just a movie. And most biopics are often "whitewashes" as you say anyway. I'd much rather have a huge documentary as theres less chance of it being about what angle to sell the movie and more about digging deeper into his story.

It's a source of amusment that Blacks generally take offense at Whites directing and producing films about Black figures, but Blacks seldom risk capital investments in movies about themselves.

Um...yeah. Tyler Perry is that rare exception. Instead of complaining about Jagger co-financing the film, a question we should ask is where are the Black celebrity investors.
