Donna Summer "State Of Independence"---rare footage from the recording session (1982)
In early 1982,producer Quincy Jones assembled an "all-star choir" to sing backup vocals on the song "State Of Independence",from Donna Summer's self-titled album. However,Donna herself was sick on this day so she wasn't able to be there (she was also pregnant at the time). This rare footage shows Quincy in the studio with all of the background vocalists (Stevie Wonder,Michael Jacksons,Christopher Cross,Dionne Warwick,Brenda Russell,Michael McDonald,Lionel Richie, etc).

Am I the only one can clearly hear Dionne over all the other voices? Or am I confusing her with Donna's lead vocal? Either way I've always loved Donna's version of this song, epecially this perfomance.
I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

My baby...Donna...

Fantastic track from my favourite DS album ever. It SO deserves a good remaster!
Ditto. I really want to be see a Deluxe CD reissue of this one complete with alternate versions, Walk Hand In Hand and any other outtakes they can find... the Bruce/Donna duet version of Protection, maybe?

that would be interesting! It's well-known that when Quincy produces an album,he goes though dozens of songs so I'm sure that there are numerous outtakes from this album.Donna has mentioned that she received "What's Love Got To Do With It" a few years before Tina Turner recorded it...I wonder if it was recorded during these 1982 sessions?

Thanks for posting this, SoulAlive! I see Kenny Loggins is in the video too. This seems like a real-life Yacht Rock episode

There's loads of stuff from the two-month Thriller sessions, which we know about because it a lot of it leaked... so there surely has to be at least that much from the 'Donna Summer' sessions, which lasted five months longer.
I'll probably change my name to Donna Summer if a Deluxe remaster ever happens, though. Loving that Yacht Rock episode, by the way.
So, is this previously unseen footage? I don't recall seeing anything from these sessions in this quality before. Anyway, I love the song and the whole album. I don't really understand why it got such mixed reviews, as it's one of my favourite Quincy productions.
I think it's a good album too. I listen to it now.
