satanic majesties request vs sgt pepper

i believe the stones album 'their satanic majesties request' has often been derided as a poor

immitation of sgt pepper but when i play these albums now i think the stones has stood the

test of time much better than pepper, the song '2000 man is one of the best the stones recorded,

there are a few other gems on there too, i admit that the long instrumental sounds like a load of

nonsense but overall i think its a great album, of course sgt pepper is a great album too but i

just think the stones is better, anyone agree with me ?

wow, SMR may be the WORST Stones album ever, or at least their most impersonal (followed closely by Dirty Work)

they just shamelessly jumped on the bandgawon of the '67 experimental sound

other than "She's a Rainbow" (which sounds like a Between the Buttons outtake), "2000 Man" (Kiss did a better cover in 1979) and "Citadel", there's not much quality (I never truly liked "2000 Light Years", sounds forced)

GREAT album title though

Dig both albums.

Two faves from TSMR...

...Citadel & 2000 Light Years from Home

One of the greats nearing the end of the Brian Jones era.

Sigh, this was when the reunion was fresh and new before they all started to hate each other again:

I like this cover:

I like this cover:

the bass sound of the MTV Unplugged album was wicked, what a bass!

the Damned's version of Citadel sounds grotesque, but I kinda like it, lol

"She's A Rainbow" is my favorite song by RS.

But Sgt Pepper is simply one of the best albums by anyone ever. shrug

Song for song I don't think it is even in the top five of The Beatles oeuvre, maybe not even the top ten. I have always felt it was terribly overrated. Sure, give it credit for being groundbreaking in terms of production technique but as a collection of songs it is seriously lacking.

Of course you may have a different opinion. wink

The production is important for sure but the songs are there, it isn't "Revolution No. 9: The Album"

Getting Better, She's Leaving Home, Lovely Rita, Within You Without You, When I'm 64 and Good Morning are all excellent songs

that said, they should have included Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane instead of Fixing a Hole and Benefit of Mr.Kite (which features some interesting effects/weird passages, nonetheless)

isn't that what Pepper's was about, anyway? EXPERIMENTATION? of course is not their best collection of songs: it's their best produced/most adventurous album

for a nice collection of songs we already have A Hard Day's Night, Rubber Soul or Revolver

No but for some people, myself included, "Within You Without You" is just as unlistenable as "Revolution 9." I never liked George's "Indian" songs ("Love You To," "The Inner Light") but at least most of them are brief, "Within You Without You" goes on for over five minutes.

I think the biggest problem was that John's songs were just not up to par. Obviously "A Day in the Life" is an exception but otherwise this was his weakest batch of songs (to that point). In general I'm not a fan of the stuff they released in 1967, too much style over substance. The songs just weren't that good and they overcompensated with studio experimentation.

Of course I will acknowledge that I have a minority opinion and many people hail Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band as the best album ever but I would easily rank Rubber Soul, Revolver, The Beatles and Abbey Road well ahead of it and I get much more joy listening to earlier albums like With the Beatles, A Hard Days Night and Help!.
