You, a deserted island and only one artist's discography. Who would you pick? Obviously this sucks badly, but you can only pick the work of ONE artist. This person could be a member of different bands, you'd be able to have all the music that this person has contributed to.
Who would it be? And why?
For me it would be Donald Fagen (of Steely Dan fame). His music is so different, rich and arranged into perfection that I couldn't think of any other artist whose work I would prefer.
Only Prince would come close. Prince's music has got more energy, but isn't as complex and rewarding as Fagen's music. So Fagen wins in the end for me! RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

I would probably take Stevie Wonder or Prince. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

Stevie, nice one!
I was just thinking Miles Davis would also make for an entertaining deserted island experience...

That's a nice catalog also. For me, I would have to have more vocal performances. At least with Stevie or Prince, you get a balance between instrumentals, ballads, hard pop/rock and funk. Not to mention they both have done quite a bit of work with female singers that I enjoy. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

James Brown. He's made so much music I'd never get bored

So if I chose the Beatles, I can also keep all the solo albums by John Lennon, George Harrison, Wings, etc.? That's a big discography.

I think they're saying that if you picked John Lennon for example, you'd have all the work he did with the Beatles and his solo work.

So no bands, just one single performer. I'll have to think about that.

Well that could mean you can pick a session musician/singer (like Billy Preston, Herbie Hancock, or The Waters siblings) and have all the records he or she played/sang on. [Edited 10/3/12 15:30pm] You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Miles Davis I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

Prince -- albums from 1978 through 2000 only.
EVERYTHING AFTER 2000 WOULD BE TOSSED IN THE OCEAN.
Why?
I love classic Prince themes, philosophies and ideologies: freedom, rebellion against the mainstream, sex as a transport, sex as religion, love as redeeming.

Yep that is the music from pretty much every era of my life. I'd do just fine with that - especially with all the upcoming re-releases included. MJ Fan 1992-Forever

Prince.. he's made so much music to listen to... It would be important to have additional music if I were on an island alone..

Actually, I disagree. Prince's music isn't diverse: his music is so Prince-y that his diversity, e.g. "Bambi," "Money Don't Matter," "Call My Name," and "She's Always In My Hair," are different genres of music, but still retain that Prince-y- ness (e.g. Linn Drums, vocal arrangement, quirkyness, great vocal melody, etc).
His genres are different but his "MUSIC" isn't. I guess I am being too nuanced here, but I hear what you're saying, Azz.
