Does it matter the genre....

When I think of range, I immediately think of guys who can carry that belty chest voice up above tenor high C but still have resonant lower voices...

Bruce Dickinson

Stokley from Mint Condition

Steve Perry

Steve Walsh

Stevie Wonder

Are a few of my favs...

As for other singers who use falsetto and/or headvoice to hit those upper notes...

Definately Prince and a whole slew of 80's Metal singers. Stevie may fall into this category too, because he studied with Seth Riggs, who specializes in a technique that makes your head voice sound as full and belty as your chest...so, I don't know.

As for females, I think SHANICE is simply fantastic and somewhat overlooked.... she's another Seth student.

To each their own. I can't tell you who to like but to say he has range is just..... wrong.

I'll bite. Why don't you think he has range? You do think he can sing, at least, though?

Mumbling is what I hear from him. I don't think he's a good singer, no. And for the record I don't think Prince has a very good natural singing voice but he has good range and uses his voice very well as an instrument to make up for what he lacks on his natural register. D'Angelo can't do that.

Sometimes guys with a great singing voice don't have a lot of range. Terence Trent D'arby for example. Great natural voice, but when he uses his higher register he sounds like a little Brittish boy (can't remember the name of the boy's name somebody compared him to). Anyway, there are guys like Johnny Gill who can blow in any register.

James Morrison perhaps. Johnny Gill Is the man. biggrin I disagree with D'angelo though.

I don't think he has a wide range, but he does well in R&B just fine. I'm a fan. biggrin I think when you talk range it means to me (and I'm sure others agree) that they can sing rock, soul, country, opera, etc.

I was speaking of a singer's ability to sing in low, middle, and high registers when I referred to range. Admittedly, I'm not well-versed on the proper terminololgy that singers and musicians use so maybe I'm saying that wrong, but I wasn't talking about D'Angelo's ability to sing different types of music in various genres. I haven't followed his career closely enough to know if he's done anything outside of the R&B/neo-soul realm.

I love it when Terence / Sananda uses his higher, soft voice (as he does on the "Symphony Or Damn" album). I'm not really that much into him using his raspy voice when he hits the higher notes or tries to sing with "power" (I really can't tolerate the chorus of "If You Let Me Stay").

I think Symphony Or Damn/Vibrator really showed his vocal range. Those records had so much gens and yes country.

Vocal range and ability to sing different genres is not the same. D'angelo is an incredible singer. I've witnessed so live. He is soul, gospel and rnb. His voice is one of the best I've heard live. But his ability to sing well on his lower register is not that good. I remember him trying so at this concert I went to, but was to me a bit comical. Prince does this better on songs like Dark, Solo etc. Prince also knows how to flip something bad into something good. It's about attitude and adopting to the sound and quality of a song, as well as his ability in the studio. Prince is not far from being an audio engineer as well documented recording producer. He knows how to make it fit in the mix perfectly. Prince doesn't have a pretty falsetto in Kiss. But the attitude put into it makes it cool.

Back in '97 I was working on a demo with an engineer and he said, during one portion of a particular song, that I reminded him of TTD/ Sanada. I was like confuse "Is dude serious?" because I had mostly known TTD/ Sanada to be raspy, and I am not. lol Not even when I try to be. It was like 10 years later before I listened to enough of his music to understand the reference from that engineer.

MJ had a superior falsetto (like Prince) and his chest voice (pre-puberty) was amazing. But his lower range was rather weak, imo.

He had a pretty good low register and demonstrated that alot even during the Jacksons era, Off the Wall, Thriller.... and as his voice matured he used his lower register more....

Just a 'btw', MJ has a ridiculous chest range for a male. Ridiculous. He is very worthy of note for this thread.

This is with Seth Riggs on the phone. Skip to 5:43 to hear him hit a D5, and stay there comfortably for some time. I think the lowest note he sings on this recording is a G2? Top note is an F5 which is incredible.

Prince: Solo

Prince uses alot of falsetto so he really doesnt have that wide of range. There are other contemporary singers that have wider range than he

[Edited 10/10/12 1:56am]

4 octaves 3 notes and one semi tone is a pretty big range. Just because Prince prefers to sing falsetto doesn’t mean his range isn’t great.
