Isaac Hayes' Walk On By My favorite track from the Hot Buttered Soul LP. The tension Hayes created by rearranging this track is a testament to his genius. The Strings add an impassioned punch to the opening of the song that carries throughout the duration of the track. The wah-wah guitars are present, however they do not dominate the sonic space. Horns, Horns, and more horns add to a monumental lead in that keeps building until it climaxes into female background vocals. By the time Hayes' vocals enter the track 2 1/2 mins in, the listener is engrossed by the tension created by the band. Hayes' impassioned pleas leads us through this tale of love and loss expertly written by David and Bacharach. However Hayes' arrangement turns the tale of not being able to get over a past love into a full scale epic, with highs and lows expertly executed by Hayes' and his band.
In is heyday Isaac Hayes had a unique gift of being able to take someone elses song and making it his own. He did so with the aforementioned track and also on Carol Kings It's Too Late, J-5's/Clifton Davis'-Never Can Say Goodbye and countless others. | |
