El Debarge feat. Chante Moore - You Know What I Like

After thinking about artists that were influenced by Marvin Gaye (thanks to Timmy84's recent "Midnight Love Anniversary" thread) I remembered this song by El...

The artist who did the album cover for the In The Storm album (Mark Ryden) also did the one for Michael Jackson's Dangerous.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

That song (You Know What I Like) is so sensuous. The video however sucks, talk about a low budget camcorder affair. lol

This was the song that introduced me to Chante Moore.

Seemed like 1991 was yesterday.

You already know by now, that I'm a big fan of the Debarge's.

El and Chante are so underrated that it isn't even funny.

I love the two of them singing together, their voices are beautiful.

HEARING them together is definitely a treat not to be forgotten.

Now I'm completely biased (see my avatar lol ), but this is the best album that you don't own. It's truely a slept on masterpiece of a concept album...for my money, one of the best of the 90s.

It's unfortunate that El released this as the sound of RnB was radically changing. It kinda slipped thru the cracks and did his last Warner's album "Heart, Mind, Soul"...also a beaut. "In The Storm" is about as silky as you can imagine for the New Jack-RnB-turns-hip-hop era, so if you like those kinda sounds this is for you.

IOW, get it! cool BTW, here's the back cover art of El w/ his African threading.

^^^ agreed. I always called this one "El's Funk Album" (couple of solid funk-burners on there)....but it's a really solid album overall. Recommended.

Allow me to join the chorus, good album. cool

Inspired by Marvin Gay's, "Whats Going On"

Produced by Maurice White and El

In my opinion Warner Bros didn't do a good job of pushing this album, the low budget video backs up my assumption. And yes Chante should've blown up all over the place, why she didn't is a mystery to me.

That's one the great mysteries of that era, why didn't Chante becomne bigger? El did a great job of showcasing her on ItS and promoted her elsewhere, but it didn't really happen for her. confused My guess is that it's the same reason this album didn't have more impact, they didn't know what direction to push her in the tides of that era. Chante wasn't pop a la Mariah Carey, adult contemp a la Whitney, and she wasn't RnB/hip hop a la Michel'le and later Mary J Blige.
