Originally released October 24, 1995, MELLON COLLIE AND THE INFINITE SADNESS would debut at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart and was certified 9x platinum by the RIAA. It yielded major hits like “Bullet With Butterfly Wings”–the band’s unlikely first Top 40 hit–the exquisite “1979” and epic “Tonight, Tonight” as well as a thoroughly inspired series of videos. Produced by BILLY CORGAN, Flood and Alan Moulder, the album would also earn a GrammyAward (1996 Best Hard Rock Performance for “Bullet With Butterfly Wings”) as well as seven nominations. Beyond the more obvious hits, though,MELLON COLLIE is a song cycle of unusual depth and considerable range. It is a collection of stunningly beautiful moments when everything lined up–a moment in time that’s still here to be treasured. MELLON COLLIE AND THE INFINITE SADNESS is being released in multiple physical and digital configurations, including an expanded 5CD+DVD Deluxe Box Set (also available digitally) and the remastered original album in 4LP Vinyl, 2CD, and digital formats. The Deluxe Box Set’s 5 CDs include 64 bonus tracks of previously unreleased material or alternate versions of MELLON COLLIE era songs, and its DVD features a live show filmed at the Brixton Academy, London (1996) and bonus performances from the German music television show Rockpalast (1996). It all comes housed in a 12 x 12 lift-top box with magnetic closure, reimagined cover art and velvet-lined disc holder. The package includes 2 books containing personal notes, lyrics, new collage artwork, plus a Decoupage kit for creating your own scenes from the MELLON COLLIE universe. The bonus content and special features were curated from the band’s archives by CORGAN, and have been painstakingly remastered for the first time from the original master tapes by Bob Ludwig. *See all track listings below. “What strikes me now about Mellon Collie is that we were coming off of making Siamese Dream with Butch Vig–which was a very idealized statement,”CORGAN tells writer David Wild in the liner notes. “Siamese Dream was very successful and very much at the forefront of how records are made now with a strong perfectionist streak. Yet coming off of that success, we went completely in the opposite direction working with Flood and Alan Moulder. We headed into a much darker, funkier and more visceral terrain. Revisiting Mellon Collie for this edition, that’s what struck me–that we made this kind of dramatic ‘about face’” at a time when most people would have made an even more expensive idealized statement. We went deep, and we went for something expansive sounding–not just expensive sounding.” The decision to work with the respected British producer and audio engineer Flood–AKA Mark Ellis–and his longtime collaborator Alan Moulder–was a significant one for THE PUMPKINS. The group had admired Flood’s work with artists from U2 to Nine Inch Nails and Depeche Mode. “I loved Butch Vig very much then, and I still do,” CORGAN explains. “The decision to switch things up was based on the sense that there was some whole other thing that could be gotten to by us, but that a more radical approach was going to be necessary to get to it. We knew we wanted to continue our evolving consciousness, but we were not quite sure how to do it.” With the full support and guidance from THE SMASHING PUMPKINS–who’ve created one of the most acclaimed bodies of work in musical history, selling over 30 million albums–EMI’s global catalog reissue campaign will last through 2013; it will encompass all the band’s albums and B-sides from 1991-2000, with other release dates to be announced. The pivotal group’s many hits defined the alternative music era and continue to resonate on modern rock radio, influencing a whole new generation.

cool. i wasn't a big fan, but this was a great album, my fave of theirs

too many alternate versions instead of actual unreleased tracks.
ever since they started their remasters series, i've been hoping we would finally get to hear the full "dearth", but sadly not, i guess.
there was so much more material that they worked on. some of it was merely a riff or a few lines, but still, judging from all that went into the pistachio medley, there is more stuff than we're seeing now on the remastered set.
oh well. one i get over the initial let down i'm sure i will love this release anyway. it's one of my favorit albums of all time and it will be great to have a remaster. they previous remasters have all been good and the bonus material was all excellent.

i'm already feeling better now that i've actually sifted through the tracklists.
lots of stuff i'm dying to hear (quoted above).
still a bit miffed about "dearth" though. even if it was just another 20 seconds longer than what we have. i would have cherished it, lol.
bring it on!!!!!!

Don't give up yet, some of what you are looking for may be released on the reissue of The Aeroplane Flies High.
I'll be picking this up but I'm a little disappointed with the dvd, it looks a bit on the skimpy side. I also would have liked "Tonite Reprise" and "Infinite Sadness" to have been included. Both of those songs were included on the vinyl tracklist and I find it flows much better than the cd. "Tonite Reprise" will be on the next reissue, hopefully "Infinite Sadness" is also on there.

I had heard all the raves about it...I think the album had been out for awhile before I ever heard it. All I know is I heard/saw the video for "Tonight, Tonight" and said, "Okay...lemme check this out."
Awesome. She has robes and she has monkeys, lazy diamond studded flunkies....

That is so spooky! I only just threw the original album back on my mp3 on the weekend....a must purchase for me. Any word on a release date in the UK?

In the U.S. I think the original release date was November 20th but it has been pushed back to December 4th. Assuming that date sticks I would guess that it would be out in the UK on December 3rd. However, when you look at the delay there was with Pisces Iscariot I wouldn't be shocked if Mellon Collie was pushed back to 2013. The fact that the track list has been announced may be a positive sign that it will be released before the end of the year.

oh my, i think i just had a little spill
listening to the pistachio medley again with the songsheet in hand i noticed that the song i thought was "dearth" is actually called "knuckles" and what do i see now on the High Tea disc: "Knuckles (studio outtake)"

i want it, i want it now. now. now. now. now. now. now. now.

Billy's said he has plans for the Aeroplane Flies High to get the deluxe treatment too, he did specifically mention Pistachio Medley.

The thing I am most excited for is to finally have Machina II on cd in decent quality. I know that a lot of people gave up on the Pumpkins after Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness but I really liked the Machina era and am really excited to hear those songs in better quality.
I'm also anxious to see what kind of extras will be on The Aeroplane Flies High and how it is sequenced. I hope it is a bit less expensive than the deluxe Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness but it will probably be at least a hundred dollars, better start saving now.

I always thought this album needed trimming, not being expanded into a 5-6 disc set.

yeah, i'm excited about finally gettingi machina II on cd. it's long overdue, although i do understand why it was released the way it was, and that in itself was very cool. but now the time has come to release it in top quality.
yesterday i was browsing around the web and stumbled upon thepumpkins.net and they actually have the best sounding, highest quality Machina II i've every come across.
check it out for yourself:
http://thepumpkins.net/music/37-music-machina-ii
there are also lots of demo's, outtakes, alternate versions and live takes on this forum as well. i don't know if this is all semi official or totally illegal tho
The Aeroplane boxset remaster sounds mouthwatering
like you said, we'd better start saving up because there's a lot of goodies coming and i'm actually excited about buying a physical release again for the first time in ages.

I think the 2CD version is enough for me, which I already have. I didn't really like his voice at first, it grew on me. The DVD would be nice If sold separately. Bullet With Butterfly Wings is my jam. The set is damn expensive and LP too. Check the price on amazon. [Edited 10/10/12 7:44am] Just Music-No Categories-Enjoy It!

i think that price must be a mistake (nearly $ 140) since the siamese dream, gish and pisces iscariot remasters are all way cheaper. the most extensive one, pisces, is only $ 40. they were a little bit more expensive when i got them as they were first released, but not much.
mind you, mellon collie will be more discs but still, i'm guessing it's about $ 60.- and for that i will be purchasing it.
if it's really $ 140,- i'm gonna have to have a very long hard think about it i guess. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Ah, but you are forgetting something very important, the deluxe version of Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness features a decoupage kit!
I do think the price will come down a bit but it will probably be at least a hundred dollars. Currently on amazon Gish is $24.00, Siamese Dream is $24.86 and Pisces Iscariot is $37.33. The only extra in Pisces Iscariot is the cassette and it costs twelve-thirteen dollars more than the other two. This one is five cd's, a dvd and "deluxe" packaging, I really can't see it being any less than a hundred dollars. The packaging is much more lavish than the first three so that will drive the price up a bit too.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
that must be worth at least 75 dollars
seriously tho, i think you're right. it is quite a lot of material with those extra discs and the dvd plus lavish packaging. oh well, better put some money aside already. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

The price has come down significantly on amazon Canada. I think it was $139.66 and now it is listed at $111.95.

$ 75,- that's what i'm hoping to pick it up for somewhere.
i wonder what a download only version will set me back?

If anyone is interested in the vinyl amazon Canada currently has it for an amazing price ($26.99). By comparison it is currently a hundred and forty pounds on amazon UK and $77.94 on amazon America.
