Rufus Wainwright, how do his albums hold up? I've got the Poses album and think that it's really brilliant, keen to check out the rest of his stuff, what do people think his best albums are? We're here, might as well get into it.

I love the Poses album! especially Rebel Prince & The Tower Learning.
But i never honestly bothered to get much into any other albums except Want One which you shoudl checkout the tracks Oh What A World & Vibrate!
Those tracks are fantatsic the rets of the album is a bit of a mess.... so idk if i would reccomen the entire thing.
Also his Sonnets album where he does 3 Shakespeare compositions is very good! it's called All Days Are Nights.
Sadly after that never got into the rest of his music besides those/: [Edited 10/1/12 14:48pm] Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

I liked his Out of the Game release from this year. For shits and giggles get him doing the Judy Garland @ the London Palladium. Overall I don't think any of his discs is a clunker. The Most Important Thing In Life Is Sincerity....Once You Can Fake That, You Can Fake Anything.

It gets panned as overproduced, but for me Release the Stars is just mind-blowing. Every track is classic Rufus. The new record is really nice as well. He's such a fantastic talent with a superb catalog.

really love that one too, just the right touch of poppiness. Also like the new one, and both the Want albums have grown on me over the years. I haven't heard the one after his mom dies - i've heard it's kind of a hard listen

I love Poses and Release the Stars but whoa, this dude is really self-indulgent and I can't get into his other stuff. I haven't heard his new one because I'm afraid that I'll start to think "yo, this dude actually sucks."
"April Fools" off of his debut is sweet. "Tiergarten" reminds me of my little cat - I was playing it when I had to take her to the vet to get her ovaries taken out (can't think of the word) and I was pretty upset.

"Poses" is a masterpiece from start to finish. Then he just really jumped the shark on "Want" one and two - way too over the top and self-indulgent. There are scattered songs I've liked post-"Poses" ("Going to a Town", in particular), but so far he hasn't really come close to matching it. * * *

Regarding the self-indulgent criticism, I totally get it but to me that's such a fine line. I tend to think one man's self-indulgent is another's "challenging artist." A lot of Rufus' work can be hard to get immersed in, for many reasons: his voice, primarily (for me at least); his attempts to write "art songs" as opposed to pop songs; the subject matter of his lyrics. But he's like Joni or Prince for me. His most challenging material, for the most part, pays off over repeated listening. Even "All Days Are Nights," which on the surface seems to try way too hard to be "important," pays off in spades after you let it soak in. The only album that really hasn't done it for me yet is "Want Two." I'm honestly not sure why.... :/

Love his debut and Poses as well as Want 1 are all great, in my opinion. But I think everything from Want 2 on has been a big let down. It's not that I think it's self-indulgent (all of his work is and that's because he's an artist, and artists should be self-indulgent) - I just don't think it's anything special. More than that, actually. It's someone TRYING to be something special but having nothing special to say.

I think I have everything up to Want 2 and I rarely listen to any of them. He's a decent enough performer but for me I just don't like much of his material. Self indulgence is fine as long as the songs are great. I just find that too many of his songs are just not that good.

Of those I have, Poses is the only one I listen to anymore.
I could listen to Greek Song and Across the Universe every day!! "She made me glad to be a man"
