Lil Wayne Tops Elvis Presley's Billboard Record Lil Wayne tops Elvis Presley's Billboard record
NEW YORK (AP) — Lil Wayne is not only making rap history, he's making rock 'n roll history: the rapper has surpassed Elvis Presleyas the leading male with the most entries on Billboard's Hot 100 chart.
Lil Wayne now has 109 songs on that chart with Thursday's debut of Game's song "Celebration," where he is a guest alongside Chris Brown, Tyga and Wiz Khalifa. Of his 109 charted songs, only 42 are led by Lil Wayne; 67 are songs where he is the featured act. Thursday is the rapper's 30th birthday.
Presley totaled 108 songs on the Hot 100 since it launched in 1958. Presley's career kicked off before that and several of his songs — like " Heartbreak Hotel" — could not be included in his total number.
The "Glee" cast has the most Hot 100 entries with 204. MJ L.O.V.E: https://www.facebook.com/...689&type=2 / YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/us...nderSilent

Yeah it's the end of the world...if you believe the media.
Elvis still had about 20 (or maybe even 30) entries on Billboard's Top 100. I can't believe they're being dismissed like that. People who write these articles shouldn't be trusted.
Most of Wayne's was as a GUEST artist.
So again, don't believe the hype. [Edited 9/27/12 7:31am]

If you add in Elvis' 30 other charted singles from the Top 100, it's actually 138, not 108. 108 is his number for the Billboard Hot 100. They should re-add them, not dismiss them. You don't see them doing R&B artists like that, do ya? Oh wait, yes they do, since the R&B chart was reinstated in '65. Silly me. [Edited 9/27/12 7:44am]

Yeah he first charted back with "Heartbreak Hotel" in 1956. His singles also charted in either the country charts (going back to 1955) and then on the Jukebox and Best-Seller's Lists (Country, Pop and R&B) until those charts were obsolete in 1958. Then he had about 31 entries before the arrival of the Billboard Hot 100 (or Billboard Pop) in August of 1958, in which by then he had already scored about seven number-one hits. His first "Hot 100" number-one was 1959's "A Big Hunk O' Love". He had a total of 11 number-ones on the "Hot 100", which if you had taken away the Top 100 number-ones altogether, the Supremes topped him. How's that for irony? Also Billboard keeps stating that he didn't have two number-one hits with "Hound Dog" and "Don't Be Cruel", even going so far to claim because it made number two on the Top 100 that that makes it #2... uh no, the song topped the Billboard's Pop Best Seller's List for the first five weeks while "Don't Be Cruel" ruled the next six weeks, altogether both songs combined stayed at number one for eleven weeks and Joel Whitburn and EPE (Elvis Presley Enterprises) are still opinionating that that means that Elvis indeed still has 18 number-ones instead of 17 (which makes Billboard's statement of Mariah Carey topping him suspicious). Thanks Timmy for your info!
This article from MTV.com explains it better:
Though the "Glee" cast has totaled 204 entries on the Hot 100 since 2009, Wayne holds the artist title, mostly thanks to his many, many features on other peoples' songs. In fact, only 39 percent (42) of the rapper's solo hits account for his total, with the other 61 percent (67) made up of his features on songs by pals including Juvenile, Destiny's Child and Birdman. Presley, on the other hand, was listed as the lead artist on all 108 of his chart hits and he still holds the title for most Hot 100 entries by a lead solo artist. For now, he's easily ahead of the artists behind him, which include James Brown (91), Aretha Franklin (73) and Ray Charles (72).
Presley might easily have sealed the crown forever had some of his biggest hits not been released before the Hot 100 chart was established. According to Billboard, Elvis had 31 songs on the pre-Hot 100 chart between 1956-1958, including such smashes as "Heartbreak Hotel," "Don't Be Cruel" and "Hound Dog."
Presley's reign lasted from the time the Hot 100 was established on August 4, 1958 through October 4, 2003, while Wayne managed to pass the king's total over 13 years and three months, with his first charting song hitting the week of July 10, 1999, when he was just 18. The recogniation of Wayne's new high-water mark comes on the rapper's 30th birthday, which he is celebrating today. The only other contemporary artist on the list is Jay-Z, who clocked in at #8 with 71 charting singles.

And there you have it. So Wayne's "accomplishment" is not so much to be celebratory about. The fact that Elvis had that many singles as a leading artist when you talk about it in 2012 is an amazing feat but people nowadays just celebrate anybody with a big number without really doing any research. That's the danger with the media. Glee don't even count because it's a show and the songs only charted for marketing reasons. And as we know, Wayne has had more entries as a guest artist then a leading artist. Same can be said about Jay-Z too.

Billboard has changed it's ranking methodology soooooo many times over the years that it's impossible to compare artists' acheivments from different eras. Into The Groove never even charted but would probably have been a number 1 hit if the rules were different. Same with Don't Speak by No Doubt.
Plus there are so many other variables...easier access to buying music, cheap mp3 singles, teenagers with i-phones, songs being cross-promoted with advertisements, the internet, etc. "Keep in mind that I'm an artist...and I'm sensitive about my shit."--E. Badu

I tend to agree with this statement (i.e. Katy Perry), but I can't help but feel sick when I read this. It goes to show the mentality and musical taste of the people buying this crap. They wouldn't have a clue what good music really is.

I really wish I could blame Billboard but I can't because Billboard isn't a person. It's numbers tallied from how many fans purchase an artist's songs and/or albums. I don't even want to stop to figure out how they come up with their little polls because at the end of the day, a fan can download (1) Lil Wayne song 100 times and that gives him 100 hits instead of just one like it should be counted because it was just one fan doing the purchase. Same with album sells whether digital or hardcopy purchase. A fan can go to Target, Walmart, Best Buy, wherever and buy 50 copies of their favorite artist's album and they count it as 50 units sold instead of counting the sale as one purchase by one individual. You can only vote for the President once so I'm just sayin' if they used SS# when albums were purchased than most of these big selling artist wouldn't be shit. That would be scary so I hope it never happens

Elvis did plenty of covers and didn't write any of his 108 charted titles, unlike Lil Wayne who always had a writing input in his songs. You also forgot to tell that he charted 109 titles on the Hot 100 in only 13 years, unlike Elvis' 45 years.
As a matter of fact, it's always a matter of how you interpret a record. A chart record has always to be put into context.

I definitely stand corrected on that statement about Elvis not doing covers..my apologies. However, to see that Lil Wayne is going to gain this title after seeing that the majortity of the 109 songs aren't even really his isn't very fair either. If 67 of the songs are just him doing a few lyrics in the middle than I can only praise the man for being a smart businessman by keeping his name out there to help sell his own music. The only artist I credit with a song is the lead artist obviously Billboard sees things differently

Eh, these are just numbers
Honestly half the songs Wayne is featured on are big for a minute... then never heard from again
And The Glee cast beat The Beatles & everyone else for most hot 100 entries... but i doubt Glee version of songs are going to be played out on radio 10 years from now.
So anytime a ''record'' is beat.. no sense to get go crazy to me it's just numbers. And records are meant to be broken Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

Please. He ain't got a title.
I don't recall anyone saying Elvis didn't do covers either.
I get it, he's a moneymaker and all, but guest appearances don't really count unless the song was an actual duet and how many real rap/R&B/pop hybrid songs are really duets anyway?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
This actually brings up a good point.... i think there should be a certain amount of time an artist is on a song to be seen as a true duet.
When a rapper comes & throws a quick verse.. and it is seen as a collab fuck that
To me a good collab is something like
Nas & Lauryn Hill- If I Ruled The World Pet Shop Boys & Dusty Springfield- What Have I Done To Deserve This Ebony & Ivory- Stevie Wonder & Paul Mccartney
Those songs have both sides singing enough verses & lyrics that it gels well witht he songs harmony & sound.
Another thing that irks me is when rappers ''collab'' and a mofo come's on rapping about shit that is irrelevant to the song.... Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

Right the song could be about someone in love and they're singing real good, then the rapper comes in about "I'm the best, I fuck yo bitch" or something like that and it fucks the song up.
