Who came out first? Erykah Badu or Joi?

Started listening to Joi's stuff and am puzzled why she never blew up-could it be because she and Erykah are slightly similar?

Joi had a stream of bad luck related 2 record companies and timing.

I also think she was boxed into neosoul, which didn't help

Joi was never neo soul ever. People use that term too loosely.

Joi dropped this classic album in 1994, three years before Baduizm.

Joi is very straight forward and does not take the b.s. that occurs in the music business like a lot of female artist would. She will check a mofo in a minute. That rep gets around.

I love Joi! I've never actually heard Pendulum Vibe though. I know Madonna heard the album and sought out Dallas Austin to work with her on Bedtime Stories.

I do own Star Kitty's Revenge which is pretty funky!

There is nothing wrong with putting people in check if they act up. It's a shame that impacted her when if it was a male artist, it wouldn't be an issue.
