Well, there are a hell of a lot of artists in Canada (and other countries) that get zero play in the US but are still extremely successful.

THAT^ is true.

International acts are not primarily concerned with cracking North America anymore. Emeli Sandé, to cite one artist, has been all but ignored by pop stations here, but her debut album has sold over 600,000 copies in the UK. The internet combined with good old word-of-mouth marketing make it possible to achieve success outside of America, which is a good thing, because the Top 40 sucks.
