Actually, I agree. I always thought she was a great singer and appreciated some songs, but I couldn't hear a whole album of hers (mainly because of oversinging and being a little too commercial) until Bionic really caught me. It really is, to a certain degree, experimental. She worked with M.I.A., Le Tigre, Peaches, Switch not obvious choices for a mainstream pop singer. And not even for Christina, whose influences (Madonna, teen pop, something soulful, power ballads) don't hint to that either. The title track (as some others) has impressive production by Switch (whose work was fairly praised with the first two MIA albums) with a monster electronic background sound of many layers and a Caribbean keyboard melody that punctuates the verses. Monday Morning could fit Blondie's Parallel Lines perfectly, and would be a highlight. Elastic Love was written by MIA and inteded for her MAYA album. MIA said Christina frustated her for she thought of bringing Christina's vocals to another level, something like that, instead she sung in a rap style very similar to MIA's own. Although it has not really her personal mark, Elastic Love (and same can be said about her duet with Peaches, My Girls) shows how Christina can transitate in these two singer's highly particular styles and do it well. I was really impressed to hear her do a MIA's song (of whom I'm a bib fan) and make it work. Could'nt imagine many other pop singers doing so. Ballads You Lost Me and I Am show her in a restrained low tone that we barely ever heard before.
It was no novelty however, that she is a really great interpreter. If you don't think so, try watching her James Brown's It's a Man's Man's Man's World and Nina Simone's I Loves You Porgy grammy tributes. Or her singing Bennie and the Jets with Elton John or Live With Me with the Stones. She is a very crafted vocalist, maybe the most accomplished of her generation, no doubt about it. Of the James Brown tribute, Patti Smith told Rolling Stone it was the best live performance she ever saw.
Besides, Not Myself Tonight is a GREAT song, really one of her very best (alongside, maybe, Hurt, Fighter, Dirty and Ain't No Other Man). And Woohoo is incredible fun, has a great sense of humour, shows again a vocal performance very unexpected by her, and has the most interesting Nicki Minaj rap after Massive Attack and since.
Kanye West's 808s and Heartbreak is being more appreciated now than it was by its released, once its sound has been imitated by Drake's last album and some other r&b/rap singers who are being well noticed today. Bionic may not be as cohesive as a whole album (it certainly has its flaws and weaker songs) as 808s to say it was "ahead of its time", but I thought it was a really enjoyable album. I wondered why the chorus was catchy. Max Martin strikes again LOL. Like alot of his stuff, the chorus almost sounds like cheesy rock (which is what he apparantly did do at the start of his career).
Don't like the autotune or harsh, compressed sounding production but alot of tracks have that type of production (damn MP3 trend), and it sounds more catered to Katy Perry then someone with a genuinely good voice like Christina, but there you go....

Totally agree, it's a shame she doesn't understand that she doesn't need to appeal to this new generation of electro/dupstep/pop music people. She has one of the best voices in the past 15 years of pop music, but she still doesn't get it. When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace -Jimi Hendrix

She was scarily skinny looking in the "Come on Over" video. I definitely like the new, "thicker" Christina better.

I don't think Bionic is ahead of its time but I think it is an enjoyable album, I like it more than Stripped. I really love the last three songs on the "standard" album ("I Hate Boys," "My Girls" and "Vanity" [hilarious lyrics]) and there are some great songs on the "deluxe" version. The timing was just a bit off, if the album had been released a few months later when she was in the spotlight on The Voice it may have done much better but the public have such a short attention span that it did not benefit at all and sunk like a stone.

I don't think 'Bionic' was ahead of its time either. I also don't think that it was as awful as many say it was; but, it also wasn't as great as it could and should have been. I think it was a rushed project; over-produced at parts for her vocal abilities; and pretty choppy as a whole. I was really expecting more songs along the lines of the re-done versions of 'Beautiful' and 'Genie In A Bottle' that were on the 'Keeps Gettin' Better - A Decade of Hits' compilation she had released prior to 'Bionic':
I don't know why these two remakes were soo much more experimental than what ended up on 'Bionic' but
I still think the songs 'Bionic', 'You Lost Me', 'Lift Me Up', 'Woohoo', 'Not Myself Tonight', and 'Vanity' are solid tunes from the album....'Vanity' still amuses the hell out of me . I think the video for the lead single 'Not Myself Tonight' ultimately did the same damage to the album that the 'Dirrty' video did to 'Stripped'; except, 'Stripped' was saved by very good follow up videos for 'Fighter', 'The Voice Within', and of course 'Beautiful' ('Can't Hold Us Down' is still the worst video from her IMO...it's just ridiculous to me; despite the message of the song ) .
There weren't any really good videos to follow up the 'Not Myself Tonight' video; which, I felt was a bit extreme with the S&M/Bondage/Dominatrix theme. It was just too much to lead off the album with especially considering that, unlike with the 'Stripped' album, Christina was now the mother to a young son and still married at the time. People didn't understand why she would want to prance around looking...well, whorish. She can actually sing and has a young child and loving husband...why continue to prance around in slut wear when you really don't have to? The imagery was just too much for even me and I love me some Chrissy.
The 'Dirrty' video had the same affect on me. I was like, "Who the fuck is this ass-less chap wearin' chick lookin' like she hasn't showered and ran a comb through her hair in a month...oh shit, it's Christina!' That video still hasn't really grown on me and neither has the 'Not Myself Tonight' video because I just don't see the need for her to do all of that nonsense. Leave all that garbage to the chicks who can't sing and have to rely on their images to remain relevant...I'm not gonna name any names . It's her extremely over-sexed imagery that hurts her success...that and the diva attitude and her tendency to oversing more often than is necessary. If she were to correct these issues, there really wouldn't be much negative stuff to say about her. Her voice is amazing when it's controlled and she's adorable when her makeup isn't applied by Ronald McDonald and she's not squeezed into her outfits (yes, I'm critical but that's because I care ).
With the 'Your Body' video, she's got the sexy imagery correct...FINALLY. It's sexy, fun, and vibrant with a sense of humor to it. She is relatively fully covered for the whole video; which, I'm happy about because showing loads of skin doesn't equate to being sexy to me no matter how great a person's body is. I think she looks amazing in that black, form-fitting dress in the end of the video JMHO. This is a good lead single and video for her just like 'Genie In A Bottle' and 'Ain't No Other Man' were both very good lead singles with good videos to introduce her debut album and 'B2B'. She has it in her to make a solid album again. She just has to stop trying to be a trend follower and do music that only she has the vocal abilities to pull off. All just my

Her last album I cared about was her Greatest Hits album, and honestly, before that, for me, it was Stripped. Can we get a 10th Anniversary of that album yet? Cus honestly, if "Your Body" is as good as the new record is going to get, I'll be skipping it. This kind of music was played out this time two years ago, and still is now. Such garbage sounding cascio keyboard produced stuff.
And Christina has such a beautiful voice, other women would kill for, and yet she resorts to this crappy music. Give me the music she was making in 99-2002 over this trash compacted stuff any day. She should just stay on The Voice. [Edited 10/5/12 20:39pm] MJ Fan 1992-Forever

Would good/great videos have made a difference? Do videos get many spins these days?
While I liked most of Bionic it was a bit bloated. I think that the best thing she could do is to release a ten song/forty-forty-five minute long album devoid of filler. Since Stripped her albums have been quite long and inevitably there is quite a lot of filler.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Of course videos do get a lot of spins these days. This is mainly the reason that I credit for Rihanna, Katy Perry and Justin Bierber, for example, successes. They got hundreds of millions of youtube views and, in a short time, came to dominate the US, and therefore - of coure - worlwide charts. Image precedes music, maybe in an even greater form than in the MTV era, since now, in our youtube/blog/internet era, people get to chose who's gonna be a success with more liberty than ever. Take a look at the carts from the last few years. It's a beauty parade. They all gotta look sexy, beautiful, fashion interesting, YOUNG and appealling to adolescents without hurting their family's opinion. Once an artist gets that, they're halfway there. If Sarah Palin were to make an album and she had amazing vocal abilities but chose to walk around in her bra and panties....yep, I would say the same thing about her too. A real vocalist should NEVER be overshadowed by their image...leave that to the 'Britneys' of the music industry who have to rely on a big image to remain relevant. I feel the same way about Mariah's image and I've loved her since the first time I heard 'Emotions'. I find their overly sexual images to be pointless, somewhat self-depreciating, and oftentimes really unnecessary considering how amazing their voices are; but, if they think that prancing around in skin-tight outfits and lingerie will help sell their music than more power to them. Sadly, I don't think either one of them has sold any more albums because of the over-sexed up imagery in recent years. If it's who they truly like to be, than kudos to them for being true to themselves at the end of the day.
Unfortunately, I wasn't born until 1981 so I missed that whole Prince in a thong and trenchcoat phase but do remember the ass-out yellow jumpsuit and didn't see the need for it either. The only reason I could think of that he would wear that getup was to get people talking about him thus helping sell his music. His image, like Christina's and Mariah's, has never kept me from appreciating the music because I usually try to listen to the music with my ears instead of my eyes. If the image is all meant to be a marketing ploy to sell albums and it actually works, then go for it. However, when the image takes over and starts to hurt the sales and credibility of the artist, than maybe it's time to change the image especially if that artist wants to remain a top artist. Same thing with actors like Lindsay Lohan. When your personal life starts to overshadow your acting abilities maybe it's time to step back and figure out who you really want to be...a tabloid star or a movie star...and then re-prioritize after that.
I remember hearing more than one person make negative comments about the 'Not Myself Tonight' video but didn't have anything really negative to say about the song itself. Same thing with the 'Dirrty' video. Many people thought the video was trashy and ridiculous but liked the song and commented on how amazing her voice is. If the image hurts more than it helps, than I don't see the need for it especially if I really love that artist and want to seem them remain successful. Chrissy is one of the few artists that I'll purchase their album when it debuts; and, 'Lotus' will be no exception. I also can't wait for the tour that will hopefully come sometime next year. She could wear a potato sack and she'd still be one of the best vocalists of our generation to me. When the years pass and her looks fade due to the natural aging process, those golden pipes will be the only things that truly remain timeless and unwavering. All just my

Is Your Body programmed to be performed live? It has managed to be in the top 60 billboard almost a month, but there was NO tv appearence. Bruno Mars new song just reached number 9 after he appeared in SNL. What's the strategy for Christina this time??
Are there other Max Martin songs in the tracklist? The way successes have been in the US (Kesha, Katy Perry, Pink), only HE knows how to put a song on top. If Your Body doesnt get there, does she get another Max Martin card on her sleeve? In our itunes era, a strong single got to be far more important for the success of an album than ever before. -Wtv u heard bout me is true,I change the rules n do what I wanna do.[Im n love w God,He's the only way - NOT!]We know we gotta die some day,so Im gon have fun evr MF night!Im gon 2 another life. How bout u?

He's a Country artist so I think it'll be an interesting pairing for them on the song. I really like their dynamic with each other as side-by-side judges on 'The Voice'. He's got a nice voice I think. Super excited about the CeeLo duet because that's gonna be a hot track I feel.

I think 'Your Body' is more programmed to be performed live than when she did that awful lip-synced performance on the VMAs a few years back. I think it was for 'Genie 2.0' from her hits album. Terrible performance all around IMO. "Your Body' actually has more real vocals on it than 'Genie 2.0' did I think so I think she should be able to do a good job with it with live vocals - no more backing track Chrissy She's set to perform on the AMAs on November 18th. Hopefully, it will be a good performance that will help promote the album that will drop on the 13th.
As much as I love my girl, I don't think she'll debut at number 1 because One Direction's album is coming out the same day and popular boy bands slaughter competition thanks to little girls who worship them. It's nice to see Max Martin continuing to drop hit songs. He's such a great pop hit maker.
