Marvin Gaye - I Want You (Live Practice Session)

This is just sick! Marvin is just laying and sitting down, casually singing and out doing the hell out of all of these so called modern R&B singers

That's Deon Estus with the cornrows. He was the bassist for Wham! and played on a lot of other records.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Deon worked with a who's who of R&B before he hooked up with George Michael/Wham. I think that was a reason he stayed in England.

Do you know where the Marvin video is from?

Yeah, Transit Ostend, that was the documentary of Marvin's concert in Ostend in '81. In 2005, they did a commemorative version of the documentary titled "Remember Marvin".

I first saw this video about years ago. I couldn't believe it. The fact that he could sound so good, while giving very little effort, just shows he was born to sing.

I can only imagine what he would've accomplished if he weren't such a tortured soul......

The possibilities were endless... maybe, just maybe, if his parents' backgrounds weren't so fucked up (both Marvin Sr.'s and Alberta's parents grew up in abusive households in the South) and his childhood hadn't been so conflicted, maybe he would've been like Sam Cooke and actually did start businesses and actually had more smarts to get back at Berry Gordy for things like copyrights and such. But yeah it's like a "what if".
