She's a good singer and she has done a lot of good work, but in my opinion being an Icon is based more on the bravery and the honesty of the artists art more than anything. You can be the most amazing singer ever with poor material and you can be the best musician but have no feeling.

falloff C'mon now..Brandy an icon? Her name and icon shouldn't even be in the same sentence.

She one of the NUMEROUS R&B divas of the 90s that WHITNEY (a true icon) influenced. She's no more of an "icon" than Monica, Faith Evans, Deborah Cox, Aaliyah, Toni Braxton, etc.

But what I WILL say about Brandy is that it's commendable how she's still putting out music despite her setbacks (flop albums, baby-daddy drama, car accident, etc). It tells me that she really has a passion for making music.

And "Put it Down" is my JAM right now. That song has really grew on me.

lowkey

i love me some brandy but i cant think of 1 iconic moment in her career. there is nothing i can think of that is instantly associated with brandy. there is nothing i can see another person do that makes me think of brandy.

The braids are HER trademark and is definitly something associated with her...... but I wouldnt call that iconic but its impressive that she manage to have success with HER braids and not have to revert to wearing blonde weave.

I used to have the biggest crush on MOESHA.

I go to meet her at the mall once and she kissed me... it was over! That was my girlfriend.

Nope. She's a "c" list artist. She continues working and that is a hard thing to do in show business.

I think the key to her success is working hard, working with the right people, and change your business model to fit the times.

Nope, I consider her a cow face, mediocre singer who can't drive worth a shit. With a no talent drug dealin brother and overbearing, voodo blood drinking momma who is clearly insane. Icon? Psshhh. Fuck Brandy!

Yes. Michael Jackson is a "pop" icon. Somebody like Oprah or Dick Clark is a "cultural" icon.

There really is no difference because they are all essential important figures of POP culture while someone like Dick Clark/Oprah isnt a pop singer specifically. I could see someone arguing that Michael is also a cultural icon because technically he is but he is much more than that.

But I get the point you were trying to make....kinda.

Well yes, I do consider MJ to also be somewhat of a "cultural" icon. He's probably the only entertainer I would consider to be part of our culture, AMERICAN culture that is. Maybe Elvis too, even though I don't like Elvis lol.

And Cinny it's been AGES since I've seen that commercial! I almost forgot about her Diet Coke ads lol. What a VOICE! She also did an add for AT&T in '94.

I always wished Whitney had done more to make herself more of a "brand." During The Bodyguard era she was the biggest star in the world, she won EVERY award for that movie and the soundtrack. She should have cashed in by merchandising, I'm talking a WH brand of sheets, towels, scented candles you name it lol. That kind of stuff will keep you making money. But one can only dream. lol

I gotcha!

Whitney is great for what she was.... and although she never reached that level... her singing style was VERY influential.... ALOT of the female vocalists today mimic her style of singing I feel even more than Aretha Franklin.

You dont have to be a brand in order to be great.... their will NEVER EVER be another vocalist like Whitney... never.... they were playing her National Anthem rendition today on the radio..... I still get chills hearing it, AMAZING

I remember in the 90s all the girls tried to dress like her. She is a lot more influential than people realise.

The whole 'never say never' era was huge.

I think she's a brilliant artist and hasn't released a single that I don't like (that includes the new one with Chris Brown)

If people say Aaliyah is an Icon then I see no reason why Brandy can't be seen as one
