Duke Ellington - "I Like the Sunrise" - Vocal and Instrumental

...

Two takes from 1947-- the song is the First movement of Duke Ellington's "Liberian Suite".

I first heard this piece from 60's Pop vocal group The Free Design. Although it's one of Duke's lesser-known compositions, I have since found a number of versions, including takes by Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Nina Simone, and even recent versions by Kurt Elling and Amel Larrieux....

...

Duke Ellington, w/ Al Hibbler - "I Like The Sunrise"

I Like The Sunrise (Instrumental)

He really knew how to pick his vocalists, and the beautiful thing is, their voices compliment the orchestra's sound(and vice versa, ala Adelaide Hall).

Discovered Al Hibbler last year via this standard,,,,

I've heard this song a million times, only heard the original last year. If butter and honey meshed together and materialized into vocal pipes, his voice would be the personification love

Great thread btw,,,

I never heard of this song(I Like The Sunrise). Great find, now I need to track down the Liberian Suite.

It seems that everything The Duke recorded between his The RCA Victor and the infamous Newport comeback should be showcased because I think its as prolific as his Cotton Club era, but it doesn't get the same treatment I'm afraid(minus Satin Doll, of course).

nod Good point about the orchestra and the voice! Like you, I've only been hearing more of Hibbler's stuff just in the last few years...
