If there's an upside to forsaking your R&B/funk roots, this must be it. I find most of the re-worked material on Lionel's album unbearable to sit through.

I would not listen 2 that cd if u paid me.

Ronnie Milsap started out as a soul/R&B singer in the 1960's. I've never heard anyone complaining about him leaving it to sing country music in the 1970's. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Fuck the people hating on Lionel
Go Lionel kicking some major ass. Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

Well there's people that say that Phil Collins "ruined" Genesis after Peter Gabriel & Steve Hackett left and made them pop. Like Phil is the only person in the group. He wasn't a member of Mike + The Mechanics, and that doesn't sound like early Genesis and neither does Peter's solo music. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

So true!, i can respect both sides of Genesis , Just as i can like Lionel in The Commodores & solo as well
And as for Genesis... you are right! the other guys had a part in the sound. It wasn't phil playing every instrument & coming up with every idea Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

It's not like The Commodores records after Lionel left were funk either. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Don't speak to much truth, you might get fishslaped by some peeps Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

Dude was always a pop act. C'mon y'all. Be happy for the man!

Exactly!
And Commodores had countryesque tracks...
And of course his solo albums had country tracks... so people saying Lionel sold out to Country

Someone that ancient selling a million copies of an album in 2012 is amazing no matter what.

I didn't think the album was bad at all. I'm happy 4 him. I'm still playing this one.

Didn't Tony Bennett have a popular duets album recently? His first record came out in the 1950's. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

You're underestimating the middle American audience. The Eagles' 2007 album sold a lot and it was exclusively sold in Wal Mart, although some record stores bought copies of the album there and resold it at a higher price. Okay those of us that lived it know the Commodores had the occasional countrified ballad but we also know that before they started that there were a hell of a lot more soulful ballads like This Is Your Life, Sweet Love, Just To be Close To You, High On Sunshine and we won't even talk about the plethora of funk jams they used to have. I'm happy for Lionel. If you can get your money this way vs pop music anymore then i'm all for it. I don't have to listen or purchase. My problem with Lionel has never been his diversity, it's just that he never came back to what put his ass in the door. If he can go out and perform all his ballads that went over to pop audiences why can't he sing his soulful ballads that r&b fans knew before pop audiences accepted him.
Don't laugh at my funk
This funk is a serious joint

They wanted the same money Lionel was getting as they were great songwriters just as Lionel were. After the success of Nightshift why wouldn't they wanna keep getting it. The truth is they did have one more moderate successful funk jam Goin To the Bank. Don't laugh at my funk
