Lionel finally hits a million in sales

From Paul Grein's Chart Watch blog:

Lionel Richie's Tuskegee, which drops from #20 to #67 in its 23rd week, tops the 1 million mark in sales this week.

It's the third album to hit that milestone so far this year.

It follows Adele's 21 (3,912,000) and One Direction's Up All Night (1,158,000).

If there's an upside to forsaking your R&B/funk roots, this must be it. I find most of the re-worked material on Lionel's album unbearable to sit through.

Ronnie Milsap started out as a soul/R&B singer in the 1960's. I've never heard anyone complaining about him leaving it to sing country music in the 1970's. lol

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Well there's people that say that Phil Collins "ruined" Genesis after Peter Gabriel & Steve Hackett left and made them pop. Like Phil is the only person in the group. He wasn't a member of Mike + The Mechanics, and that doesn't sound like early Genesis and neither does Peter's solo music. razz

Didn't Tony Bennett have a popular duets album recently? His first record came out in the 1950's.

You're underestimating the middle American audience. The Eagles' 2007 album sold a lot and it was exclusively sold in Wal Mart, although some record stores bought copies of the album there and resold it at a higher price.

Okay those of us that lived it know the Commodores had the occasional countrified

ballad but we also know that before they started that there were a hell of a lot

more soulful ballads like This Is Your Life, Sweet Love, Just To be Close To You,

High On Sunshine and we won't even talk about the plethora of funk jams they used to have. I'm happy for Lionel. If you can get your money this way vs pop music

anymore then i'm all for it. I don't have to listen or purchase. My problem with Lionel

has never been his diversity, it's just that he never came back to what put his ass

in the door. If he can go out and perform all his ballads that went over to pop audiences

why can't he sing his soulful ballads that r&b fans knew before pop audiences accepted

him.

They wanted the same money Lionel was getting as they were great songwriters

just as Lionel were. After the success of Nightshift why wouldn't they wanna keep

getting it. The truth is they did have one more moderate successful funk jam

Goin To the Bank.
