The NY Observer Attacks Madonna

This isn't really MDNA related, so I made a new thread.

In either case, ouch. Welcome home, Madonna:

http://observer.com/2012/09/madonnas-last-days-of-disco-has-the-material-girl-finally-run-out-of-material/

I’m a pretty big fan of hers, and this article fascinates me.

First off, I can’t think of any other artist, in any other medium, who inspires so much debate about being “relevant” than Madonna. If you’re too young, or just don’t remember, let me assure you: this exact article has been written almost every year since at least 1992.

So the writer (who sounds like a hardcore self hating fan) puts the end of Madonna at 2000, around the time “Music” comes out. Fair enough. Let’s say that every artist comes to a moment when they no longer channel the zeitgeist, and pop music in particular is obsessed with youth and sex and newness. “Music” was her last # 1 single in the US, and she was about 42 years old.

Which is not much older than Mick Jagger was in 1980, when the Stones released Tattoo You, and “Start Me Up”. That was probably their last classic single. Elton John was mid 40’s when he did “The Lion King”, which - look I wouldn’t call it a classic, but I know I couldn’t escape those damn songs, and I don’t know anything he’s done since. Dylan was about 40 when he started releasing Christian songs, Prince was about 30 when he released Lovesexy, and Michael was 30 something at Dangerous.

So let’s just say she had a good run, beat the relevancy race in most cases, and bested most of her peers.

So why do we have to keep reminding each other that she’s no longer relevant?

Along those lines, how come no one writes articles informing us that David Bowie’s no longer relevant? Or that no one cares about Pearl Jam’s new material? I’d like to see a huge editorial about how Paul Simon doesn’t matter as much as he did in 1986. Where is it?

In their own way, these debates about Madonna’s relevancy are the biggest passive aggressive compliments she can get. They don’t write about Bowie because they don’t need to - nobody thinks he’s still “relevant” (I hate that word). But Madonna, with the stadium sell outs and pissing off Putin and Le Penn and the middle aged body she doesn’t want to keep covered? Everybody, I have news! She doesn’t matter anymore! Look away!

Ok, wait, NOW she sucks. No, wait...NOW. Wait, damn. Ok, hold on...NOW! Now she sucks! See? She sucks, right? Right? Guys?
