The big announcement The Rolling Stones have been promising has arrived! In celebration of their 50th anniversary, the British rock legends will release an expansive multi-disc compilation titled Grrr! on November 13 that will include two brand-new tracks the band recorded recently in Paris.

Several versions of the career-spanning retrospective will be issued, including a three-CD, 50-track edition and a super-deluxe four-CD package featuring 80 songs.

Grrr! will feature a healthy helping of Stones hits and classic album tracks from throughout the group's half-century existence, as well as the new tunes, which are titled "Gloom and Doom" and "One Last Shot."

Four versions of Grrr! will be released:

• A standard three-CD set housed in a digipak and boasting featuring a 24-page booklet.
• A deluxe three-disc edition packaged in a DVD-sized box and including 36-page hardcover book and five collectible postcards.
• A four-CD super-deluxe box set featuring the same extras as the deluxe package, as well as 30 additional songs, a seven-inch vinyl single and a poster.
• A vinyl box set containing the same 50 tunes as the standard CD set collected on five 12-inch LPs in a bound box.

To promote the album, The Stones recently launched a campaign incorporating the 3-D uView app, which allows fans to see special images online via their smart phones. The band's official website and Facebook page now feature a version of the Grrr! cover art -- a painting of a lusty gorilla with a very familiar set of red lips and protruding tongue -- that becomes animated when viewed using the app.

Looks like a neat way to celebrate the anniversary, although I already found Forty Licks too much with 2 CDs, three or four discs are like overkill.

Nobody wants any new songs on these greatest hits. They omitted some good possibilities to add those crap new songs on 40 Licks.

yep..you think hardcore fans want to hear new wack songs that arent on par with their history..maybe on a new proper release but not on a greatest hits set.

I don't own anything by the RS, so this might be my 1st purchase.

How do you know if something is "wack" if you've never heard it? Many acts stick new songs on hits albums to get people to buy it that already have the other songs.

excuse me? Don't Stop and Losing My Touch were solid. The other two tracks were dreadful though, I admit it (Keys to Your Love / Stealing My Heart, ugh)

and everybody was happy with A Bigger Bang

the extras, the two new songs and the 24-page booklet are the real meat here, since the fans already own those 80 songs, lol

I'm anxious about the track-list, specially the songs they'll choose from the 83-05 era...(post Start Me Up/mature era)

Please, hardcore fans are obsessed with new tracks, they are ones who get upset about repackaging the same hits over and over again. "Don't Stop" was a nice addition on Forty Licks anyway.

I think the problem is simply: the hardcore fans that want the new songs have to pay probably $40 for the 3-CD package; and the casual fans who want the greatest hits are having to pay for stuff they didn't ask for.

Oh well, the Stones making a grab for cash by selling something over its usual market value is not a new problem.

Is Hot Rocks out of print? That is the comp new fans should get first in my opinion.

Eh, it was great for its day but it is not great value today. I think it is about eighty-five mintes which would nearly fit on a single disc. In fact both volumes of Hot Rocks would nearly fit on two cd's (I think there is roughly fifteen minutes too much material for them to fit). Currently they are listed at a little over twenty dollars on amazon.

Either way, having it be 3 cd's should allow for some missing hits and small ones instead of reducing them due to added new songs. Yay.

A casual listener is not likely to buy a 3 CD set. Charlie Watts new side project album isn't that much:

the 3 cd-edition will basically include those great tracks (some of them HIT singles) that weren't included in Forty Licks

that includes I Wanna Be Your Man, Tell Me, Time Is On My Side, Little Red Rooster, As Tears Go By, I'm Free, Bitch, Rocks Off, Heartbreaker, If You Can't Rock Me, Memory Motel, Respectable, She's So Cold, Waiting on a Friend, Harlem Shuffle (not that great, lol), Slipping Away, or even Out of Control

the 4 cd-edition is the real deal anyway

Yeah it'd probably be close to $60.

wanna see the tracklist. bet we can guess at least 40 out of the 50 (or 60 out of the 80), but still interested to see what they decide is worthy. a true career spanning greatest hits would be great, but when you get into this number of tracks, the artist generally has some ideas about what you should here, and it doesn't always line up with what anyone else wants to hear from them.

A hits set with their album tracks would be a good idea.

I'd qualify a lot of the Stones' album tracks as hits.

But I have a feeling there's a lot of obscure stuff from the '80s & '90s they're going to be sure I have whittle down when I put this on my iTunes

The guitar alone on "Hand of Fate" makes it worthy of inclusion.

By the way, I believe Forty Licks is out of print so this set should be a great pick for the casuals.
