this man's music has never stopped being played in our house.
since i was a toddler: & used 2 fall asleep 2 Elvis litterally BLARING from mum & dad's turntable at midnight...
to 2day: & DVD's of the Vegas shows & Compact Discs...

I will never 4get his music & amongst all the crap ...
he just wanted 2 sing & entertain & make wonderful music 4 people.
Tho he didnt write all that many songs he recorded... even covers of big hits,he made his own with such an incredible voice, so full of & soul.

the 3 Boxsets from the 50s,60s & 70s i love.

not a huge Elvis fan meself, but what is so great about the man? I'll tell you why many African-Americans in particular don't like him. Elvis capitalized on his mimickry of black artists and the most censorship he ever got was a TV shot of himself from the chest up. Meanwhile, the black performers he copied from couldn't even enter the arenas they were selling out in through the front door. He's celebrated as a hero for being idol of American music. Why don't we celebrate Little Richard and James Brown as the idols?

the appeal of elvis for me is the enourmity of the tragic features of his life. born poor in the south, he rose to be the biggest star in the world. as a young man he, along with a very few others, helped define "cool" as we know it today. then a very short time later, he became the laughing stock of entertainment personalities, a cartoon character. then he dies tragically. you couldn't write a story that was his life.

i can definitely understand that. i know several friends who love his stuff. but again, for me he remains an icon of wasted potential, and only have interest in him from a sociologic standpoint.
