Sa-Ra Creative Partners (Shafiq, Om'Mas & Taz)

Since Frank Ocean's debut is all the hype atm, it got me thinking about this influential outfit of three musicians who've put their mark on modern soul and funk (most recently, Om'Mas Keith co-producing that Ocean album - notably heard on Pyramids with a Sa-Ra-esque sound).

They began making waves around 2005 with Hollywood:

After that, they went on to produce for the likes of Bilal, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott and Talib Kweli, as well as going solo (Shafiq's En A-Free-Ka is a brilliant album). Since then, I've been hearing a lot of their influence seep through, especially in the LA beat movement (Dam-Funk, Flying Lotus, Madlib, Georgia Anne Muldrow etc.).

Any fans?

I think someone posted a song or two from them. I always loved their sound...

Hey, Timmy! Been a while, mate.

Yeah, I just searched the org and found this description of the group from 2006 which I thought is apt:

"sound like Jay Dee slapped Organized Noize upside the head with Cameo one day in the studio"

Ha.

They did a great rework of Herbie Hancock's Trust Me with Erykah called Fantastic Vampire:

It's nice to have you back, Arx. biggrin

I've always enjoyed Sa-Ra's music. I think, if I had to rate both albums, Nuclear Evolution would be my favourite. love

Came across this bossa nova performance by Om'Mas by way of the Roy Ayers Project. On vocals and a gritty Wurlitzer piano.

duccichucka

They're more interested in "sound/soundscape" than into song

writing. But I'ma Beatles/Wonder/Elliott Smith/Prince fan so yeah,

I can't knock these dudes for doing something I'm not interested

in.

Their sartorial style is dope, though...

I love a bit of Sa-Ra.

Every time I mention them to people I am met with the usual blank stare and cries of "you mean Sun Ra!" No, I mean Sa-Ra. lol

I wish they would put out another album.
