Chaka writes some of her own music, just not as much as Mariah.

I LOVES ME SOME CHAKA.... Although Mariah lack some funk half the time...but Mariah takes the cake in my opinion. I own all of her albums and her dance remixes are off the charts. Chaka never really dived in her collection like that. I believe her Warner years after I Feel 4 U left more to be desired like her Rufus years....and even if those were awesome ...Mariah still has alot more material to go on than that. I think thats what that poster is trying to say..... Just because she CO writes some of those songs doesnt necessarily make her better. Without question Chaka has the most impact and I think influence.
Before aardvark15 goes on a rampage with insisting Im dissing Mariah... NO I AM NOT DISSING HER AND I AM A FAN but I believe Chaka has the most influence overall.

Comparing a 70s artist to a 90s artist seems like apple and oranges to me... and if you like Mariah because she CO writes her music which I feel is a generic reason than so be it. Its alot more to do specifically with why Chaka is a legend the same with Whitney Houston who didnt write her music either.

I was just pointing this out. The op says "this covers everything" and as a songwritter Mariah definetly wins in that category. [Edited 8/29/12 15:12pm]

I would so beat that up.
I'm still going with Mariah; those who are going with Chaka are stuck on some Prince likes her/70s is vintage and therefore better/Mariah is crazy thang. I'm going by voice: not songs, not stage presence, not co-writing credits or charting #1s on Billboard.
Mariah can do more with her voice than Chaka. But I understand why most of y'all are picking Chaka.

So that makes her better?
Mariah CO WROTE those songs.... she didnt write them BY HERSELF and its debatable how much she has written in the exactly writing process. Mariah has definitly been involved in the songwriting process but I never taken her seriously as a songwriter as I would Stevie or MJ but I do respect that she at least participates in the process. I think Chakas influence is far greater than that one thing. Because based on your arguement I guess Mariah is better than Billie Holiday or Dinah Washington who I feel are far superior to Mariah Carey.
Now if Mariah had wrote a song like Bohemian Rhapsody BY HERSELF I could see you possibly debating this.... I think the fact that Mariah co writes some of her songs in itself is something to be respected BUT using that to make her more superior to CHAKA...... nahhh Mariah would not be doing what she does if it wasnt for Chaka!!!! So how can anybody say she is more superior overall in impact and influence?

I'm assuming you are going strictly off of the Chaka songs that have been played to death on the radio. Obviously, you have not dug REALLY deep into Chaka's catalog. And I'm not even talking about her Rufus or solo projects. I'm talking going deeper than that. Chaka has made dozens of guest appearances on other people's albums over the years. And I'm talking in every genre. Chaka has recorded songs that most people except pure Chakaholics have never heard. Chaka music is far more eclectic than Mimi. Mimi is basically R&B, Pop and Hip-Hop. The only genres that I can think of Chaka has not recorded in are heavy metal and opera. Although, she has recorded some rock opera. She's recorded with Chicago, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Stephen Bishop, Frank Nimsgern (german artist), Andre Heller (german artist), Joe Henderson, Miles Davis, Ry Cooder, Ric Wakeman, Guru, Lenny White and the list goes on and on. When she started with Rufus, their first album was a Rock/Country album. Nothing really Soulful about it. So going by diversity alone, Chaka wins hands down.
I wish Mimi would branch out into something like Jazz, something that she has dabbled & experimented with in the past and a genre I feel her voice is exceptionally well-suited for, but she is insistant on staying stuck in the Hip-Hop field. That's why alot of people aren't taking her seriously anymore. One thing I love about Chaka is she has NEVER been afraid of musical experimentation. She has never stuck with what was proven to work. She takes chances. I think that makes her a better artist as a whole. But, again, I adore both of them.

Well, that would be pretty ridiculous. Other than her duet with R. Kelly, Celine has not had seen any measurable success in R&B music. At least both Mimi and & Chaka have had tremendous R&B success so that comparison makes more sense. "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley

No contest whatsoever. What funk has Mariah Scarey EVER recorded. None whatsoever. If you ain't never made not even one ounce of funk ever, you ain't shit and don't even deserve a recording contract. Chaka Khan by 10,000 miles! Andy is a four letter word.

Chaka. | |

They both hit the notes they want to hit and the voice is always stronger than the material behind it. The only reason why someone would say Aretha is because she's from a period of "good music" and primarily focused on R&B which apparently automatically makes her better.

Yeah she has not made alot of funk you are right.

Who in the 90s and 00's was still recording Funk music and managed to remain relevant? Funk died in the mid 80's. If you ask most people under the age of 30 what is Funk music, they will look at you like a deer in headlights. "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley

That's why I don't like any artists that came out from the 1990s up until today. I don't like even one single one of them except for some house artists that came out in the 1990s but that wasn't mainstream music. When funk left mainstream radio, I was done with mainstream radio. There's no rhyme or reason to comparing these two singers in any way for me; it's like comparing apples to melons. They do two entirely different things as vocalists in genres that don't even match
I'll chime in on another comparison thread

Not quite true. Mariah did do a cover version of Cherelle/Jam & Lewis' Didn't Mean To Turn You On. She even used THE same track as Cherelle's original:
