I know it's a TALL ORDER--What is your best album of all time? I know this is a TALL ORDER on top of the top 500 albums list--but if you have an all time best album in your opinion--list it here. Mine, after much thought, has to be Stevie Wonder's "Songs In The Key Of Life." I think this album fulfills every expectation before and after its time, for me. So, what is your all-time favorite "best" album?

At least name one--I had the same problem on the Luther or Barry thread... I chose this album because of the diverse music, the stellar song-writing and musicianship, the cohesiveness of the album as a whole theme-wise, the pure joy Stevie exhibits in making this album. and how he had and still has his finger on the pulse of what's going on today...

It's a toss up between Rufus feat. Chaka Khan "Ask Rufus" and Teena Marie's "It Must Be Magic" If it breaks when it bends, U better not put it in!

Oh hell no, they ain't the same, dammit
But ok I'll bite, the title shift between these two,,, [img:$uid]http://bklynbywaycuse.files.wordpress.com/2011/07/talking-book.jpg[/img:$uid][img:$uid]http://dkpresents.files.wordpress.com/2009/02/prince_sign_o_times.jpg[/img:$uid]
Probably due to the same reasons you mentioned, minus the lyrical content since its the last thing I pay attention to. I will listen to just about ANYTHING if the music drew in no matter what is spewed by the singer.
In addition to what you said, what I love about these albums are the subtle & quirky intricacies that were laid out through out the entire album. You could tell that both men are REAL music nerds at heart, and it shows in their production(Listen to Stevie's side project at the time by Syreeta, you'll find many examples of what I'm talking about) and listen to just about every opening/ending in SOTT, you're liable to find a handful.
Have always been fascinated with the lil' details, it makes for such a fun listen, because just when you thought you've been familiar to all there is to know about these albums, you end up discovering more hidden surprises. Sonically, they could stand the test of time, thanks to the ones who mixed those projects.
Another factor that led to my reverence, upon my initial listen to both albums I wasn't ready for how emotionally charged they were, both men wore their hearts on their sleeves, and even though I wasn't familiar with the backstory behind both albums, I figured there was one. Even though artists have showed their vulnerability since the beginning of time, it never ceased to be recieved with admiration.
Sorry for blabbering, I let my geekdom get the best of me

I agree with your geek-om. It is very hard to choose any "best" album (probably why this thread ain't getting hits LOL). I am divided between Stevie and Prince, myself. But, if I had to pick one--it would be the one I did, for all of the reasons you mentioned. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I thought I had a definite favorite album; I even mentioned it on the 500 albums thread, but for some reason, this thread has made me rethink my choice... I'll need a while to think about it now.

I'm listening to this album tonight for a third time and I can find no fault with it. And, I've been listening on and off to it since it came out--for me, on eight-track.
P.S. Maybe I should have made a favorite song of all time thread! I will say that I love Stevie's song "Always" so much that if they ever hook me up to tubes in the hospital when I am old and a goner, they had better include "As" on repeat...and then after that one Prince's "Let's Go Crazy." Then, I could die happy.

Damn! I might as well say it..."As" may just be the best song ever written, sung, and performed. Sheer perfection... [Edited 8/25/12 4:15am] "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

It's funny...that album was released in 1976 when I was a kid,and it still moves me the same way it did back then! It doesn't sound 'old' to me at all.Still sounds new and vital.
