Under the watchful eye of Motown founder Berry Gordy, the partnership between the Supremes and Holland-Dozier-Holland yielded an astounding run of Number One hits at mid-decade. In June 1965, they set a record for the most consecutive Number One hits by an American group when “Back in My Arms Again” rose to the top of the Billboard singles chart. The other hits in that streak were “Where Did Our Love Go,” “Baby Love,” “Come See About Me” and “Stop! In the Name of Love.”

This milestone is all the more impressive because it occurred at the height of the British Invasion - a period when beat groups from abroad otherwise ruled the charts. The Supremes were America’s ingenues, exuding a stylish charm and soulfulness that appealed across the board to black and white listeners at a time when racial divides were coming down.

Landing on American shores on February 7, 1964, they literally stood the world of pop culture on its head, setting the musical agenda for the remainder of the decade. The Beatles’ buoyant melodies, playful personalities and mop-topped charisma were just the tonic needed by a nation left reeling by the senseless assassination of its young president, John F. Kennedy, two months earlier. Even adults typically given to dismissing rock and roll conceded that there was substance in their music and cleverness in their quick-witted repartee. Between the lines, and without obvious disrespect, the Beatles announced the ascendancy of youth - and the inevitable coming of a generation gap as a result.

Significant being the last single they released before Freddie died. The video was shot weeks before then, and is a very eerie, poignant and bitterweeet reminder of the fragility of life.

176) Go All The Way - The Raspberries

Raspberries lead singer Eric Carmen (guy who went on to have a solo career with All By Myself, Never Gonna Fall In Love Again, Hungry Eyes, etc.) wrote this in a way to get the sexually controversial lyrics (at the time, anyway) past the censors.

This song is about a girl trying to convince a guy to "Go all the way," meaning to have sex with (her). Carmen told Blender magazine in 2006 that he was inspired by The Rolling Stones performance of "Let's Spend The Night Together" when Mick Jagger had to sing it as "Let's spend some time together." Says Carmen, "I knew then that I wanted to write a song with an explicitly sexual lyric that the kids would instantly get but the powers that be couldn't pin me down for."

The song has been described as a cross between The Who and The Beach Boys and as making the chorus 90% of the song, with the verses barely there and only serving to bring the chorus back to the forefront:

"So when I sat down to write 'Go All The Way,' there were a couple things I had in mind. I thought, 'What part of the song is it that people really want to hear? It's the chorus.' As a result of all that, 'Go All The Way' has a 10 second verse, and then the chorus is a minute long. I figured just to get to the chorus as fast as I can. That was the plan behind the song."

While the song went on to sell well over a million copies and Spin magazine named it one of the top 100 singles of all time, most of the band hated the song as being too syrupy for their tastes. Guitarist Wally Bryson described the song as "trite" and said "after the intro, the verse sounded like a Bing Crosby song."

A left-hander who took a right-handed Fender Stratocaster and played it upside down, Hendrix pioneered the use of the instrument as an electronic sound source. Players before Hendrix had experimented with feedback and distortion, but he turned those effects and others into a controlled, fluid vocabulary every bit as personal as the blues with which he began.

But while he unleashed noise with uncanny mastery — see: the hard-rock riffs of "Purple Haze," "Foxy Lady," and "Crosstown Traffic" — Hendrix also created tender ballads like "The Wind Cries Mary," the oft-covered "Little Wing," and "Angel," as well as haunting blues recordings such as "Red House" and "Voodoo Chile."
