138) Ray Charles - Drown In My Own Tears...

The name Ray Charles is on a Star on Hollywood Boulevard’s Walk of Fame. The name Ray Charles designates a superstar worldwide. His bronze bust is enshrined in the Playboy Jazz Hall of Fame. There is the bronze medallion that was cast and presented to him by the French Republic on behalf of the French people. In just about every Hall of Fame that has anything to do with music, be it Rhythm & Blues, Jazz, Rock & Roll, Gospel or Country & Western, Ray’s name is very prominently displayed. There are many awards given to him in the foregoing categories as proof.

Known as "The Genius" since the early 1950s, Charles started out primarily as a jazz and blues pianist and singer in the style of his early musical idols such as Nat "King" Cole and pianist Charles Brown. But over his more than 50 years in show business, Charles built a career that defied genre, bringing his soulful voice, keyboard prowess and songwriting talent to the pop, country and R&B charts.

Among the first musicians to blend the emotional power of gospel music with secular themes, Charles won 12 Grammys, including a lifetime achievement award in 1987.

144. Tantra - "The Hills of Katmandu"

Giorgio Moroder launched italo disco with Donna Summer, but I think this is the pinnacle. Taken from my review of the parent LP The Double Album:

"The Hills of Katmandu" opens the album with an enormous bang. A bass pounds in octaves and is soon joined by an ethereal female backing voice and a funky guitar line. The buildup continues with elements incrementally added to the bubbling cauldron - a sudden crunching guitar burst, a chanted refrain, eerie Eastern-tinged synthesizers and an invitation to "fly with you to the misty hills of Katmandu". While this alone would be enough to carry the song, it grows even more towering as the refrain is doubled by woodwinds and synthesizers furiously morph into the thumping bass line to great effect. After nearly seven minutes of this minor-keyed menace, the song quickly shifts gears into a whimsical segment in major key complete with disco percussion and horns. Before long, it is devoured by the opening section, this time armed with phlanged beats and an even more deadly mixture of synthesizers. The happy refrain returns once again and is joined by the phlanged beat as a sort of reconciliation between the two main segments to close out the final few minutes with a sense of celebration. At over 16 minutes of drugged-out mysticism and delirious escapism, "The Hills of Katmadu" easily lives up to the myth and stands at the very apex of italo disco.

151) Miles Davis - Boplicity

Miles Davis was the personification of restless spirit, always pushing himself and his music into uncharted territory. He was an innovative lightning rod for musicians from all genres — particularly the brightest young players. Davis created some of the 20th century's most challenging and influential music.

In the late 1940s, Davis emerged as a leader himself, and he and arranger Gil Evans organized a nonet — including baritone saxophone, French horn and tuba. With arrangements by band members Evans, Gerry Mulligan and John Lewis, they recorded the classic, The Birth of the Cool in January 1949. The nonet soon fell apart for lack of work, but the sound it created worked its way west to be reborn as "cool jazz." Davis, however, was rooted firmly in bebop.

152. it. ~ Genesis (The song title is spelled as "it.", not "It")

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

The weirdest Christmas song ever, this is my favorite from a band that effortlessly covers so many styles. I've long been a huge fan of the bass guitar, but this is the song that made me finally start to learn it!

159) The Flamingos - I Only Have Eyes For You

“I Only Have Eyes For You” is the name of a song that was made popular in the spring and summer of 1959 by a group called the Flamingos. The song was actually written for a film in the 1930s, and it had a popular run at the music charts at that time. However, the Flamingos’ version gave the song a whole new dimension. Set in the “doo-wop” style of its day, their “deep-echo” version proved to have broad national appeal, rising on both the rhythm & blues (R&B) and pop charts.

Today, the Flamingos’ “I Only Have Eyes For You” continues to resonate with many listeners, young and old. Music historians of the 1950s regard the song as a classic. For some, the song offers a “take-you-away” musical immersion, and for a few, a near-hypnotic, otherworldly experience.
