241) Love - 7 & 7 Is...

The multiracial band recorded three groundbreaking albums that fused rock, blues and psychedelia - the self-titled Love, Da Capo and Forever Changes.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Although the original members of Love were only together for two years, they typified West Coast progressive rock.
The excess and bravura of the period is reflected on Da Capo, one side of which was taken up with a single song.

243. Annie - "Anthonio"

"Anthonio" plays like a letter to a vanished ex, as Annie recounts the events that led to her heartbreak: a whirlwind romance with the titular lothario with "a silver tongue" full of promises left unfulfilled as her subsequent letters are "returned to sender". She sings with a cold detachment that is matched by several layers of truly icy synths that rise and fall in sines and cosines before bubbling over into a rather glorious chorus. The first four words are completely loaded with emotion ("Oh Anthonio" echoing her disappointment and heartache; "my Anthonio" revealing that she still cares) and given a truly lilting melody to convey a real sense of mourning. She then goes on to question whether she ever really mattered to him and if he ever wonders about her anymore. A key change augments the tension, while Annie dejectedly admits, "you got everything you ever wanted from me," while accepting that she was "just another girl" and it was "just another night" before dropping the ultimate bombshell: "My baby has your eyes". The rapturous pulse of the song coupled with Annie's bleeding heart make it perhaps the greatest example of Annie's blissful melancholy in her entire career. It follows that "Anthonio" is not only the best song to emerge out of the Don't Stop era, but one of the best pop songs of the entire decade.

245) Dilate - Ani DiFranco

All apologies to Carly Simon, but you probably wish this song was not about you. Cue strings tight enough to feel around the collar and pupils instantly inking over with a vivid anger only prey can truly ever comprehend. Cue cycle: Disintegration. Reconciliation. Waiting in line, making another key.

247) Johannes Brahms - Symphony No.3 (Third Movement)...

Brahms studied music as best he was able while supporting himself by playing piano at bars and brothels and by turning out arrangements of light music. His early compositions continued in the progressive direction of the waning romanticism: huge sonatas, piano trios, and other works like the Piano Quartet in G minor, for the finale of which Brahms utilizes a flashy gypsy melody. But Brahms later abandoned this track, devoting himself instead to synthesizing the Classical forms with the almost by now forgotten early Romanticism, with its slowly unraveling sense of tonality.

Many of Brahms' later works are undoubtedly his best, including the Four Serious Songs, the Quintet for Clarinet and Strings in B minor, and the last two of his four symphonies. The symphonies contain much that is stirring, heroic, gentle and melancholy, as can be heard in the wistful third movement of the Symphony no. 3 in F major,

249. George Winston - "Night Suite"

This captures so well that feeling at night in the dead of winter when there is freshly fallen snow and the moon casts sprawling shadows from the barren trees and I am awestruck by the beauty of the world.

253. Porque Me Haces Llorar? - Juan Gabriel

For those who don't speak spanish, the title "Why do you make me cry?" refers to a love

which doesn't acknowledge the depth of his love, the suffering, which causes him to drink.

He says he's never been a cryer, much less because of pain. He's never been a drinker, much

less for love. Lots of emotion in this song.

Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

255) B.B. King - How Blue Can You Get...

His reign as King of the Blues has been as long as that of any monarch on earth. Yet B.B. King continues to wear his crown well.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Over the years, B.B. has developed one of the world's most identifiable guitar styles. He borrowed from Blind Lemon Jefferson, T-Bone Walker and others, integrating his precise and complex vocal-like string bends and his left hand vibrato, both of which have become indispensable components of rock guitarist's vocabulary. His economy, his every-note-counts phrasing, has been a model for thousands of players, from Eric Clapton and George Harrison to Jeff Beck. B.B. has mixed traditional blues, jazz, swing, mainstream pop and jump into a unique sound.

Classics such as "Payin' The Cost To Be The Boss," "The Thrill Is Gone," How Blue Can You Get," "Everyday I Have The Blues," and "Why I Sing The Blues" are concert (and fan) staples.

263) Buddy Guy - I'm Not The Best...

In this live cut, Buddy does a masterful job of combining his normal Blues roots with a band that's kicking a vicious James Brown like boogaloo groove.

Buddy Guy at his best.

264. Kylie Minogue - "Can't Get You Out of My Head"

Unrelenting, chugging synths fill the off-beats in a minor key that paints a sort of half-dream, half-nightmare world in which Kylie does a remarkable job of sounding nearly possessed by her desire. The incessant “la la la” chorus acts as an utterly brilliant sonic metaphor of her inescapable obsession- a sort of double-edged barb that pierces and seduces with equal measure. All of these elements coalesce into a truly magical whole, rendering “Can’t Get You Out of My Head” a first-rate pop song. Carefully thought-out while maddeningly simple on the surface, it is everything a pop song should be.

267) John Coltran - My Favorite Things (Live)

John Coltrane, McCoy Tyner (Piano), Jimmy Garrison (Bass), Elvin Jones (Drums)

Spend any amount of time listening to, or talking about jazz, and the quartet will become part of the experience or conversation. Which quartet was the greatest has been discussed ad nauseam, and in the end there is no right answer. It all comes down to personal preference. For me, this is it. These guys were so super tight and in the pocket, to the point of almost reading each others minds, that they could get loose, twisting and swirling around each other's parts, filling in the holes, contributing perfect counterpoint to what each of the other players was doing, without feeling sloppy or stepping on the other guy's toes.

This is not my favorite (heh) version of 'My Favorite Things', but that one isn't on YouTube and it's too long for me to upload it without splitting it in half (which I hate). All of the versions of this song are good, though, and this is one is above average. This performance is very exploratory, with Tyner and Trane both reaching out for something different than what they'd done earlier.
