222) The Beach Boys - Surf's Up

Brian Wilson's songs celebrated a West Coast teen fantasy, full of surfing, driving and pretty girls that barely hid the songwriter's inner conflicts. Wilson orchestrated and produced glossy, manicured tracks with an ultra-smooth blend of guitars and vocal harmonies, creating a signature pop sound as recognizable as any in rock history.

He and Van Dyke Parks began collaborating on Smile in late 1966, but after a mysterious fire at the studio where they were working, Wilson reportedly destroyed most of the tapes in a fit of paranoia. Several songs have surfaced since; the Wilson-Parks "Heroes and Villains" (Number 12, 1967) appeared on Smiley Smile, and the melancholy, beautiful title cut of 1971's Surf's Up was also a Smile composition.

224. Blondie - "Rapture"

With "Rapture" coming on the heels of Number 1 hits "Heart of Glass", "Call Me" and "The Tide Is High", Blondie showcased themselves as one of the most diverse pop acts of their era, and it all comes together in this beautiful blend of funk, disco and hip hop. Look no further for utter cool.

233) Dionne Warwick - Looking With My Eyes...

Although Hal and Burt's collaboration with Pitney would yield two further hits, the duo had just discovered the singer who would become the definitive interpreter of their songs. Over the next ten years, Dionne Warwick would record more than sixty Bacharach/David compositions and would make nineteen of them Top 40 hits.
