Classic Musician Mosaics Made From Their Own CDs

The world “epic” gets thrown around far too often these days – it seems you can even say it about a loaf of white bread – but when it comes to these mosaics of classic musicians, that was the first word that sprung to mind. The likeness of 7 artists was created using not only just an array of colorful CDs, but their very own albums. We see Jim Morrison, Michael Jackson, Jimmy Hendrix, Bob Marley, James Brown, Freddie Mercury and Elvis, all easily recognizable and created with stunning passion.

The works, created by Mirco Pagano and Moreno De Turco, see the CDs spilling out of backpacks, discarded shopping bags, filing cabinets and drawers; it’s as if these musicians – all of them deceased – couldn’t be held back for all their musical passion and have exploded into reality again.

However, not all is as it seems. The project is part of Piracy, an ad campaign, film short and sculptural work by U.S. advertising agency TBWA. The idea is that these musicians were ultimately brought down by internet Piracy (actually a silly idea when you consider when most of these artists died or made their money). What looks like passion then becomes something far more sinister. The point is made clear in the video featuring Michael Jackson at the bottom of this post. You can find out more about the project here.

I wonder how much money it cost and how many CDs it took.
