Donald Fagen's new album is supposed to be "funky"!!!

As mentioned earlier on these pages Donald Fagen's new album "Sunken Condos" will be coming out this October.

If that news is not exciting enough in its own right, I just went to the DF website and the promotional news item about the new album (http://www.donaldfagen.com/news.php) is updated since the last time I saw it. It now ends with:

"The word is that, from now on, everything Donald does has got to be funky."

Wow, not only do we get a new DF album, but now it is likely to be funky too!

Of course, there were always elements of funk and groove in DF's music, but now that it is specifically mentioned that "things have to be funky from now on", my expectations are completely sky high!!!

Never mind a new Prince album, I can't wait until the 16th of October to get my sophisticated groove on!

RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

Even better news would be that the release date is even earlier.

Okay, THAT is good stuff. smile

After Morph the Cat, I'd kinda sworn off the team. Just wasn't feeling it so much anymore. But with a declaration like that I know I've got to get it.

Wouldn't doubt it!!! Last tour they (Steely Dan) had the Legendary Tawatha Agee (Mtume) singing Background Vocals 4 them. On another tour they had Dennis Chambers on Drums. And they've used Bernard Purdie on Drums b4 as well!!!!

cool cool cool

The band for the last few tours has been pretty stable in terms of personnel:

Not to mention very, very good.

Quite a few Dan Fans I know didn't dig Morph as much. Although it is no Nightfly I still think it is a good album, although a bit mellow maybe. Let's hope the promised "funk" will spice things up a bit more this time!

As a long time SD/Fagen fan, I am certainly not in that camp.
I think Morph is a masterful Pop album which continues the SD/Fagen tradition of high quality recordings, musicianship and song writing.

I don't really need him to be funky (although the music always grooves in some way), just good.

I also thought Morph was a good Fagen album and recommended it to a few Dan minded people. They later told me they didn't like it and called it a boring
snoozefest! I must say that I ended up seeing the album in a less positive light after hearing that, although objectively there seems to be little reason for dislike. Like you said, the high quality musicianship, songwriting and recording is all there.

I agree that funk isnt nescessarily needed, but i have always enjoyed the uptempo tracks with an almost discobeat feel the most. So if the new funk motto means there will be quite a few upbeat funky songs on this new album, that would be a good thing for me personally.

But then again, i'd rather have 10 well written slow songs than 10 shallow upbeat compositions.

I hear you.

I wonder if the "funky" statement is his direct sentiment or something a PR person came up with.
Regardless, it'll be good to get another Donald Fagen album whatever it is.

Making funky music doesn't necessarily mean funk music. I think Peg is quite funky....

Agreed, any new SD or DF album is a blessing as long as it will last. The guys are definately not getting any younger!

Whoever came up with the "funky" statement is unclear, but it definately enhanced my interest in this new project! cool

Agreed. There are quite a few SD and DF tracks that are funky, non are pure funk though. The funky part is more in the groove of the songs often. Peg is an outstanding example!

Not so much for me to be honest. I will listen to the most pedestrian 70s disco any day of the week over say, Jeff Buckley. Because I can't stand boring music.

I am not talking about boring slow songs, but stuff like Third World Man for example.

And don't get me wrong, I dig uptempo disco/funky stuff more than ballads. I'm hoping for lots of good quality uptempo, groovy, funky tracks filled with memorable hooks and lyrics! Go Donald go!!! wink
