Another artist that's impossible to pigeonhole, Ryuichi straddles so many boundaries--Classical/Pop/Funk/Avant Garde /World Music/Jazz...he's been influenced by everyone from John Cage to Herbie Hancock, to the Beatles, to Debussy, to Bootsy Collins....

i love the albums/eps he did with alva noto. those are amongst my favorit music.

and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

He's such a prolific artist, but don't forget his pre-solo stuff with the "Yellow Magic Orchestra"; there's some kewl stuff there too.

Like most, I was totally mesmerised with the fact that he not only played such an amazing role in "Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence" but also played/composed that haunting soundtrack to the film.

My love for Japan made me pay attention to the music and my love for Bowie made me watch the movie and I got away with an everlasting love for Ryuichi Sakamoto's music.

But what floored me was the vocal track of Forbidden Colours with David Sylvian. Still does.

And even though I like his stuff with Noto as well, I am more drawn to his bossa nova and film scores these days.

Yet another wonderful thread fom Paligap clapping music

Incidentally, earlier tonight I was just making a mix of his music as a gift to my neighbor! She's a Japanese pianist who is teaching here at the German Conservatory. In addition to some of the works you have posted here, I also included some more tunes from his Brasilian music trio, Sakamoto Morelenbaum2 - this is one of my favorites:

It's funny, I first heard Yellow Magic Orchestra in '79, but it wasn't until David Sylvian's album "Brilliant Trees" that I really realized who Sakamoto was---- then I went back to YMO, and realized that all of my favorite YMO pieces were written by him!
