This was my first time seeing Whitney on the big screen, and I'll cherish it forever. I still miss that woman so much.

If you're a lover of old music, then I think you'll like this flilm. Jordin Sparks surprised me, her one performance of "One Wing" was really good, and I liked her acting as well. I think the cast did good, and I think they did the original songs justice.

I know I'm in the minority, but I saw the original and didn't like it much. It was very low-budjet and didn't make a lot of sense.

I'm a sucker for musicals though, maybe that's why I liked it. lol

Yeah I hate musicals. lol

I thought it would be No. 1. Stallone movie looked crappy and still made money.

Actually that was a crappy opening for Expendables HUGE letdown, that movie has to do between 150-200 million to break even. So it will most likely when it gets to dvd, but thats a huge failure

But that's being released worldwide, not just US.

I know. I could see it being remade as a made-for-TV movie on BET or Lifetime. But as a box office movie? It just didn't make sense.

I agree,I'm tired of movies being remade! Hollywood has become very lazy in recent years.Furthermore, the original 'Sparkle' film wasn't all that fantastic, anyway. It didn't deserve a remake.

true but its a dismal opening, they were predicting twice as much, huge miss

The acting was much much much better than Dreamgirls and the storyline was more intense and wasnt so fairytale..... I was exactly pretty impressed with Mike Epps.

I hope this doesn't get back to Beyonce. If she gets wind of the fact that there are people who think there are better actresses than she, she's going to have the starring role in dozens of movies over the next couple of years. She won't stop until she proves you wrong. lol

I enjoyed it... It was kinda slow in the beginning but it was pretty good.

I was impressed with Mike Epps and the actress who played the older sister (beautiful girl but she cant sing!!! like she cant sing AT ALL lol but good actress! ) and the dark skin sister (I really really liked her out of the three/ good actress/pretty)... Jordin was pretty good to (Ive never been that impressed with her singing, she looked pretty in the movie tho)..... Whitneys voice when she spoke was kinda raspy but she did good... in parts of the movie she was pretty funny razz

I havent seen the original yet. Ive been told its better than this 2012 Sparkle and it more than likely is. Originals are always the best razz

I liked Dreamgirls. I watched that Movie so many times it ain't even funny. lol

I plan on seeing Sparkle again this Friday.

As far as acting goes, Dreamgirls had better acing imo. Eddie Murphy, J-hud, Anika Rose, Jamie Foxx have great acting chops. I was never crazy about Whitney's acting, and Sparkle wasn't her best acting imo, that goes to Wating To Exhale. I still think she did a good job though.

Also, Sparkle had some AMAZING wardrobe pieces. Those outfits were amazing.

The original is meh to me. You can tell it was cheaply made, but the songs are sang better you could say. I thought that 'Sister' stole the show with her acting. She did the role justice. Her singing was so so. I was pleasantly surprised by Jordin's performance of 'one wing'. Imma have to "acquire" that some kind of way. lol I still can't take Mike Epps seriously, sorry lol. But I thought he did okay. I didn't realize Whitney's character would be so strict lol, she didin't play no games! And I LOVED how they made the dark sister go off to medical school. In the original she leaves and is not mentioned again.

I'm seeing it again!

I LOVE Eddie.. but his acting wasnt all of that in Dreamgirls.. ANY comedian could have played his part... Mike Epps on the other hand was more funny in Sparkle and was more convincing during those serious moments.. Mike Epps REALLY impressed me.

Jennifer Hudson was of course good......

Anika Ross.... I like her but her acting was not all that good in Dreamgirls... it was exactly forgettable I forget she is even in the movie

Jamie Foxx did OUTSTANDING in Ray but anybody could have played his role in Dreamgirls.. his acting wasnt that impressive in Dreamgirls.... AT ALL.

Time for some Truth.com

The ONLY reason why Dreamgirls got Oscar attention and the hype that it did was because Beyonce was the leading girl in it and she was popular during the period. Also, Eddie Murphy (That was his first major role in a LONG time) and Jamie Foxx... who had just received a Oscar two years earlier... The previews were good to, and the movie had a big budget and the producers put money into marketing it EVERYWHERE... Dreamgirls is no better than Whats Love Got to do with it or Jacksons in American Dream, Temptations movie, Little Richard movie etc which were all t.v. made movies and were 10 times BETTER than Dreamgirls with a lower budget

They were the drawer for J-hud...who really is and was the show stopper of that movie.

I nearly walked out the theater ... lucky it was my friends b-day...

lol

Sparkle clothes were very cute and the hair styles were so during that era... Diana would be proud razz

I dont take Mike Epps seriously as a serious actor either because he isnt... but for what it was he did good. I was not expecting him to play an abusive man. I thought he would be a comedian throughout the movie.

Dark skin sista clocked homeboy and went to medical school and didnt look back!!

The movie is worth a second see for sure

The older sister did very good in her role. The attitude the darker sister had was the same I aint taking no shit attitude J-hud had in Dreamgirls which is why I think I really liked her and her cute afro razz

I'll tell you what I really didnt like about the movie... I didnt like the abrupt ending.. where it just ends with her on stage and fades out.... I was like WTF I know thats not the ending?

lol lol

lowkey

the movie was ok but i dont know why they called it sparkle because they changed the entire story. the only thing they kept was the names of the characters and the songs. i think they could have gotten better actors. i really wish they would have let beyonce play sister, i mean the girl playing her looked like a beyonce clone but had zero screen presence.people going on about ewhitney's performance even suggesting she deserve an oscar is ridiculous, i love nippy but she didnt really do nothing in the movie and her role was alot smaller then you would think based on the hype.td jakes being involved they tried to put a gospel spin on the story, i think if they was gonna do a remake they should have left the story alone.the fact that they made satin struthers a comedian instead of a pimp/drug dealer kinda says it all.

I saw the movie this weekend. It was---good to just ok. I thought that some parts of the movie were good, the rest was just ok. I give it 3 stars out of 5. The original was better (4 out of 5 stars) imo as it was more realistic. Certain parts of this remake were unrealistic and inauthentic. One thing that annoyed me about this remake was the costuming. Some of the dresses the girls wore while performing were way too risque and showed too much skin for them to be in 1968. America was still pretty conservative back then and there is no way those girls could have gotten away with showing all that skin back in the 60s. Especially that red dress with the plunging neckline Jordan wore for her number at the end. I think the first half of the movie was good, but the 2nd half was lacking. It did not have that authentic feel to it that the original movie did. The 2nd half looked more like it was written, directed and produced by young people who were born after the 60s creating what they imagined the 1960s to be like.

Some think the original is dull and depressing. I used to feel that way about it too until I watched it again a couple of years ago and found a whole new appreciation for it. After I saw the remake this weekend I watched the original again and again I was impressed by the story, the acting and the music which imo is superior to this watered-down remake. Like someone else here said, Lonette McKee owned that role of Sister. I also like Irene Cara's performance of Sparkle better than Jordan's although I think Jordan did a good job. I liked that they made Sparkle a gifted songwriter and that the mother (Whitney) had more of a role in this movie than the original had. But overall, the original is better imo.

I was okay with the movie. The original, for me, is a cherished movie just because I was young and it was the hot new black movie. Seeing it with my friends, makes it it a nostalgia thing. Back then, I didn't think of it as low budget and depressing, which it is, even though I liked the actors.

The new movie is an improvement. As a period piece, I thought it was all right, based on what they had to work with and it isn't exactly like the original, which I think I like the new twist better. So Phillip Michael Thomas was missing and Lonetta does own the role, but I liked the new sister too, and Jordan was just fine as Sparkle and the sister Dee was a step up. Worth my 5 bucks.

I would be interested in seeing it but I was not made aware by any promotional campaign that it had even opened this past week/end.

I also thought it would be more of a winter movie?

i cannot see this movie being done any better than the original.

lonette mckee tagged the role as "sister." (i'd be disappointed to go see the current remake because i feel no one could top lonette in this role. also the way the three ladies moved on stage while singing, imo "only en vogue could have done it that well."

[Edited 8/20/12 12:28pm]

i saw the other day and its cute. i had no idea it was a remake tho. it was weird to see whitney singin 'his eye is on the sparrow'. carmen ejojo was fantastic!
