Right Now !! .. although we all went through thoughts of hate crime towards her for cancelling the Australian leg of this tour (and every other tour except that Girlie Show cesspit) .. I'm proudly loving her again and the album, the shredded tit hanging out on stage, the Pussy Riot balaclava, the gay rights stance in Moscow .. I love it when they get to this age and think "fuck it, do what I want" .. I do wonder when she will say she's had enough.
.. some people tell me I got great legs

2002. She lost her coolness with American Life and still couldnt regain it with confessions. I was in high school when that came out and despite Hung Up being quite successful she still was met with groans if I mentioned her to others. Although I was only 11 when Music came out I just remember the feeling surrounding Madonna back then. She was larger than life cool, still the Angelina Jolie of that time. I havent felt that kind of awe from people about her since.

Maybe Confessions era outside the US, and Music era in the US.

I love all of her 00's albums though, very underrated.

I like 3 albums in her discography.
Two are obvious: Ray of light and Like a prayer ... and American life boxed .
But I'm not sure that American life can be called "cool" period because of criticism, publicity and sales were very weak. So yes, I agree with Timmy, it's 1998-1999: status, popularity, sales, performances and quality of the music, and even Madonna's vocals .... everything was on a very high level.

Ray Of Light......

After that album she had some ok moments, but Ray Madonna showed how far she had come from her 80's dance pop. To the darker sound on ROL.

And she has been going backwards after that lol

1998-2000 was definetly the last time people cared about every little thing she did and was loved by a lot of young people. She's had occassional relapses since but only during heights of her hit singles, so only for about 2-7 weeks.

I went to high school 1994 - 1998, and she wasn't cool then. Girls, guys, didn't matter. Nobody was listening or talking about Madonna.

I don't know why the emphasis on cool, though. Or "relevant", whatever that means. I think she's pretty awesome, regardless of what kids think.

Not sure what part of the world you're from, but though I know Bedtime Stories was selling slowly in the US, most people I knew at the time were into r&b/hip hop music and if they cared about her, it was for Take A Bow and some of them owned Bedtime Stories. I think the singles and videos are some of the most creative of her career, but I find it to be a boring album overall, though it's way better than MDNA. I was in junior high at the time.

I was in high school during Ray of Light, and I noticed that those who were into it the most were people who liked industrial and alternative, dance music, or those older than me who liked her in the 80's being pleasantly surprised by her new material, my mom beat me to buying Ray of Light and that never happens cause it's always me who went out of the way to pick up the albums.

I actually could agree on the 2000. Music came out when i was in 4th grade & was HUGE. And a lot of the kids i knew really dug it.

To the general public, I'd say probably Music era. Of course, to some people she's still cool; and to others, she never was.
