Oh and apparently Tuskegee ain't even the best-selling album of new material in 2012, this is:

[img:$uid]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/96/One_direction_up_all_night_albumcover.jpg[/img:$uid]

It's the first new album of 2012 to sell past one million this year. It's like 1.07 million right now. Lionel's still at .093 million or whatever that was.

So Adele's 3.7

1D's 1.07

Lionel's the third best-selling.

Damn. Their album cover looks like an old Keith Partridge album cover

from the 70's. lol

I didn't even think of it like that but now that you mention it, it does remind of the Partridge Family album covers. lol

it's sad,but many veteran artists must do projects like this in order to remain relevent. That's why so many of these people do covers albums (Rod Stewart,Seal, etc),or Supernatural-styled projects featuring alot of "hot" guest artists.

If Lionel had done an album of all-new music (with no guest stars),it would have flopped just like his last several albums. So,he's really just doing what he has to do,if he wants to continue selling records and having a career.

but here is the thing what is a flop to an artist that what 60 something years old, way past his "cant do nothing wrong" period with the mainstream, which quite doesnt even exist anymore for music, i mean what is the number he should be selling of a new album?

Now granted his last few studio albums have been anything but...Lionel like, its almost like getting a new ne-yo album, on one album Lionel had a song with snoop dogg, really? so i think when these older artists try to reach kids, they flop because to me, if an album stinks its a flop, in this day and age i cant judge a flop on numbers because no one has numbers. Looking at that kid group One Direction, sure it sold a million, but they are supposed too because they are the "shit" now, like Lionel was say 1982-1988 when he sold millions in months.

Older artists always will have that base which is something that is not going to exist anymore, dont care what artist comes out now, they are never going to have longevity or have anyone care what they are doing when they are say Lionel's age, so i dont really know what a flop can be to a 60 something year old guy, i mean its like when Elton John comes out with his new album and it only sells 200,000 and people say thats a flop cause he used to sell at least a million in the 70's ? but now hes almost 70, so where is the flop? your audience never stays 100%

You don't understand the music business, do you? lol Lionel has talent yes, but talented people can get lucky too. Lionel used a strategy that he knew would pay off. Country music is selling real good or albums with country influences. Why'd you think some country audiences bought Adele's album? Because it was found that Adele had country influenced songs on her album and country folks loved her album so they bought it in droves along with the rest of the population. To say that the only reason Lionel succeeded was because of talent is like saying one got by with just his wills and/or prayers. You need more wills and prayers to get to where you need to get. Lionel, at 63, is thanking his lucky stars he was able to use his country ties to do this record and find success. Don't believe me, ask Ray Charles' family. Look at how successful he was with country records in the '80s after his pop/R&B success tapered off.

What im not hearing people talk about is the artists that were on this album, HELLO they werent no names most are the biggest in country now, or in a few cases are freaking legends of the genre. Just with Kenny Chesney, jennifer nettles, blake shelton, billy currington, tim mcgraw and shania twain and then factor in Kenny Rogers whom Lionel wrote LADY for, and then legendary Willie Nelson, and then put in Jimmy Buffet who has been selling tons for years, this was basically something that couldnt miss, sorry to let people know this, but the country audience is ALOT more loyal and open minded than the RB and RAP and POP genres, where a whole lot of crap comes into play, this why Lionel didnt go out and do some Ne-yo garbage rb album again.

First off, Cover albums overall are not big sellers not to mention Lionel himself is not a big selling name today........... I think its utterly ridiculous to suggest the album so well base off of "luck" alone. Lionel went out and marketed that album the smart way. He didnt just sit on his behind and not do anything.

Very true, and again i dont get people talking "flop" when talking about artists of this age and career level. Earlier this year Barry Manilow released a great album "15 minutes" of all new material for the first time in a decade, the album charted in the top 10 week one and then obviously disappeared pretty much, now most would say FLOP, really? a guy around 70 years old with ALL NEW material (rock and pop) very experimental album charts higher than Flo-rida and all the new jacks and he is a flop? i dont get it at all

Totally agree. Dont know why some folks are trying to downplay Lionel's success saying it was just luck. His album is doing very well, yay for Lionel! woot!

Same here lol I never had a problem with Lionel doing country-flavored songs and I like many of them ("Sail On","Stuck On You",etc).

but an entire album of his old songs, remade with today's country artists? No thank you lol

er

Does this mean that when everything else fails, you can always make a country album? Maybe Prince should move 2 Nashville...

duccichucka

There are two things to abstract from this story (if it is indeed true):

1) country music fans still buy albums

2) old people still buy albums
